That time I made him get rid of his change…

For years, The Sweetheart carried change in his right pocket. Not just a couple of quarters for a Coke. Not a dime or two to dash into the telephone booth. (Yes, we can remember those!) He carried a large handful of change every day.

I was frustrated that after 35 years of marriage my beloved was still carrying a pocket full of change. I could hear him coming a mile away and recognize him in a room even if I was blindfolded. He jingled when he walked and it was distinct. It always sounded the same; on the downbeat, a jingle, on the upbeat it was more like a breath before the next clanging of copper and silver. (Do they still even use copper in our pennies?)

As time and methods have evolved down through the years, we no longer need so many coins. A bottle of pop, or soda, usually costs more than a couple of quarters, and most all vending machines take paper money now.

If you see a phone booth on the corner it probably belongs to Superman, not AT & T. While living overseas we didn’t even need those gold and silver euros for parking; we paid with our phones!

So one day, after hearing me gripe for years about “getting with the times”, he did it. He emptied his pockets for the very last time and added the last of his coins to his savings basket.

He no longer jingled; he could now sneak up on others if he was so inclined.

I couldn’t hear him coming down a hallway.

Change

What had I done? I had begged for him to change, I had teased and bugged him until he had given in. Now I wanted the jingle back. There were even a few times we NEEDED the change!

I wanted it back because it was a part of him. I insisted HE change to please me but when I finally got what I had asked for I discovered it wasn’t what I wanted at all.

Why do we think we ALWAYS know what is best for someone else? We are constantly trying to change them, to mold them into what WE want them to be.

God didn’t make us all the same and that is a wonderful thing. I have habits and annoyances that drive The Sweetheart up the wall but he loves me for who I am and realizes he cannot change me after all of these years.

Me? I keep trying. Ugh.

How many times have we been guilty of things like this in the spiritual?

We pray, think we have all of the answers, even go so far as to tell God what we want done, how things should be adapted according to our desires.

I think that sometimes God sits back, folds His arms and says, “Okay, have it your way.”

“And He gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.” Psalm 106:15

Then we are left with the results. There is no jingle or happiness in our lives because we have tried to manipulate the Almighty into doing what WE think is best. Instead, we should be trusting the One who sees down the road.

He is the Master conductor. We can trust Him and His ways. He does all things for our good, looking ahead to make sure every piece of the puzzle will fit. He sees that we are not only taken care of but that we thrive.

What kind of change are you pushing for?

Maybe you are trying to force it, wanting too much, too fast, or trying to bargain with God in order to get your way.

“The LORD Almighty has sworn, ‘Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen.'” Isaiah 14:24.

Remember that pocket change. You might get what you ask for but you won’t like the end result.

Let that handful of silver stay in your pocket until God says, “It’s time.”

Slow and Steady wins the race…

It’s #FiveMinuteFriday! I hope you enjoy these word prompts as much as I do. When one speaks to me, jumps out at me, as this one did, it makes it easy to write. A flash mob of writers all focusing on one word and yet coming up with so many good thoughts is exciting. Today, the prompt is Finish.

Go.

One of my favorite memories of the story, The Tortoise and The Hare, is the old Bugs Bunny cartoon. (Warner Bros.) I have read the book to My Three Sons, many moons ago, it is an easy one to remember, one that you can tell over and over again and relate to so many facets of life.

tortoise-and-hare

In case you do not remember the story, or perhaps have never read the book, Mr. Hare (or that old wascally wabbit, as Elmer Fudd liked to call him, was a big-time bragger.

He was fast and he knew it.
He was first, and he was proud of it.
He was so sure of his lightning speed that he challenged, of all people, a tortoise; a slow, sluggish, unhurried, turtle.

How many times have you seen a turtle cross the road? Probably, none. You have seen a turtle crossing the road, but how many of us have sat and actually watched that poor turtle start at one side and reach the other?

No patience.

But the rabbit was so confident of his speed and ability that along the way he stops to rest, several times depending on which version you read or watch. Eventually, he falls asleep.

Where is the tortoise? He is doing what he has always done; walking.

Slow and Steady,

Steady and Slow,

That’s the way we always go!

But Slow and Steady (that is his name in one of the books!) didn’t stop. He didn’t dawdle, he didn’t look to his right or to his left. He didn’t get distracted, and if he was tired he didn’t stop. He kept going, no matter what.

He finished.

Slow and Steady

He not only finished, but he got to that finish line before the rabbit. While he was snoozing, the other team takes the baton. Not because he was faster, not because he was sly, but because he was steady.

Are you steady? Don’t worry about it if you think you are slow, as long as you are not lazy. We all are different, God made us that way.

But He does want us to be

steady
consistent
faithful
reliable
dependable
unwavering

Not looking to the right or to the left.

Not being swayed by those on the sidelines that say, “Come on over and take a little rest! It’s okay! There’s plenty of time…”

No, we keep pressing on, even in uncertainty. We push, we press, we work while it is day.

There is a Finish Line approaching. The signs of the times are everywhere and we cannot afford to be distracted in this late hour of the race. While we are being steady, while we are pressing on, we are reaching out to those that we meet along the way and say, “Come join me, walk with me, and get to know my Jesus…”

He makes the race endurable! He makes it all worthwhile. He gives strength for the journey, a light to our path and a purpose to our walk.

He is the One waiting at the end of the race, waiting to welcome us home. Hearing Him say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant…” will be all the reward we will want.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8.

Just finish. The best is yet to come.

Stop.

When Fear Doesn’t Belong…

It’s #FiveMinuteFriday! Write with little editing, and no fear! Ha, I inserted that one myself but I am joining up with others at LisaJoBaker’s #FMF to write for love of the written word. Today, Crystal Stine is hosting at her blog! Enjoy!

Has there been a time in your life that you have been simply TERRIFIED? Have you been gripped with the kind of fear that takes your breath away? How about knee-knocking, trembling, shaking fear?

I venture to say we can all answer, “Yes” to those questions.

We have all been afraid.

I lived most of my life with various fears. I am not proud of that. I would let fear envelop me, overtake me and even run my life. That is Fear’s specialty; taking over your life and keeping you from doing, and being, everything you desire.

God Almighty left us with so many booming “FEAR NOT’s” in the Bible we should never be afraid again! We just don’t seem to apply them. Maybe we think they are for someone else? Or we are saving them for a “really scary time” when we might need them more than we do right now.

I don’t think that is what God intended when He left us His Word. I think He meant for us to take it at face value, every day, in every situation.

Look at Isaiah 41:10. Many of us know it by heart, and rightly so, but what if we believed it?

“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Look at all of the “Fear Not’s” in this scripture!

Fear not…God is with you.

Fear not…God is your God.

Fear not…God will strengthen you.

Fear not…God will help you.

Fear not…God will uphold you.

Those promises alone should be enough to carry us through any storm, doubt, or chaos in our lives. Does it mean that trials will not come? No! It explains that the God that created the universe promises to be with us no matter what we may face in this life.

Fear Doesn't Belong

We do not need to be afraid because He is with us! Not just when we call on His name, but He is literally WITH us! When Jesus ascended into heaven He promised He would send the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. That came to pass in the Upper Room when the wind blew in and filled all 120 of those present with the Holy Ghost! Then 3,000 more were filled later that day when they saw what had happened to the followers of Jesus, and it was repeated over and over again throughout the book of Acts.

Yet it did not end with the 28th chapter. “For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:39.

We do not need to be afraid because Almighty, Jehovah, Yahweh, The Comforter, is with us!

Jehovah-Shammah, “The One who is with us everywhere for He is Omnipresent”!

The saying goes, “You have nothing to fear but fear itself.” According to Isaiah 41:10, you can lay that one down too.

Fear doesn’t belong!

Fear Itself is not hiding in the closet any longer. Bind that spirit of fear, loose the peace of God in its place. Speak the Word, claim it, believe it and live fearless!
