A little chamber on the wall…

Elisha Man of MiraclesContinuing our series on Elisha, Man of Miracles! You can read the first one here! Love this story of Elisha and the Shunammite woman. So much faith, so many good nuggets to tuck away in our hearts! If you do not know the story, I will be quoting quite a bit of scripture so we do not miss a thing in this great story from the Word of God.
A little chamber on the wall…

In 2 Kings, Chapter 4, the story begins like this: “And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.”

She is described as a “great woman” here in the King James Version, as a “notable, wealthy, well-to-do, and even leading lady”, in other versions. We gather that she is, at the least, well-known in her city. It is also obvious she wanted to serve the prophet, Elisha. She wanted to do something special for him any time he was in the area. She even fed him regularly!

But for this woman of faith, it wasn’t enough and she asks her husband to make him a room. It wasn’t fancy, as we see in the scripture, just a bed, a table, a stool to sit on and a candlestick for light.

Elisha is thankful for the place to stay and wants to do something special for the woman in return. His servant, Gehazi, tells the prophet that the woman has no children so Elisha prophesies to her, “About this time next year you shall embrace a son…the woman conceived, and bore a son when the appointed time had come, of which Elisha had told her.”(NKJV)

Here is his first miracle for the Shunammite woman…a child of her own after so many years of being barren.

The child gets a little older and one day runs to his father in the field holding his head and complaining of pain. His father has the servants take him back to his mother to care for him. The Bible says he sat on her lap until noon and then he died.

Distraught, this woman of God “…went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.”

She didn’t take him to his own room, nor to her room, but to Elisha’s room!

Then she gathers what she needs for a journey…and takes off to go find the prophet.

Elisha sees her coming and sends Gehazi to meet her. “…and say to her, ‘Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?’ And she answered, ‘It is well.’”

Pausing here! It is well? Her son is dead and she says, “It is well.” Why? Because she knew if she could get to the man of God that all would be well! What faith!

She ran on to the prophet, caught him by the feet and Gehazi came close to push her away. “But the man of God said, ‘Let her alone; for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me, and has not told me.”

The Shunammite woman tells Elisha what has happened to her son and Elisha immediately sends Gehazi on ahead of the two of them. “Get yourself ready, and take my staff in your hand, and be on your way. If you meet anyone, do not greet him; and if anyone greets you, do not answer him; but lay my staff on the face of the child.”

Gehazi obeys and when he arrives he lays the staff on the face of the boy but nothing happens. He runs back to Elisha, who is coming to the house, and tells him, “The child has not awakened.”

Elisha goes into his room, shuts the door and begins to pray. He then performs one of his more interesting miracles!

“And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm.”

Things are starting to take place but the boy still has not awakened. He is not completely healed.

Elisha begins to pace in the house, we assume he is praying, and then he goes back up to the boy and does the same thing again. This time the child sneezes seven times and then opens his eyes!

Persistence has paid off on the part of the Shunammite woman! Persistence has paid off on the part of Elisha!

He calls for Gehazi to bring the mother and presents her son alive and well.

This miracle is exciting in the fact that the boy was a gift to his parents when they were unable to have children. The Shunammite woman was honored by God because of her service to the prophet, the man of God, Elisha.

When trouble comes, she immediately goes to the source of her miracles; the man that she knows can touch God! She believed in the God of Elisha, she believed even before He had given her a son, so now in her time of grief and distress she runs back to the prophet so that he can touch God for her situation.

Today, we don’t have to have a mediator; Jesus already took care of that for us at Calvary. He paid the price, we don’t have to, and He took upon Himself all of our sickness and even the keys to death and hell.

If we have persistent faith like this woman, we can see our prayers answered and miracles, signs and wonders performed for us too.

What if the Lord asks you to do something different to see that miracle come to pass? To step out in faith and trust HIM and Him alone to do what needs to be done? Elisha had likely never laid his body on another before to see life come back, but he was obedient to God, and that is what it took to accomplish the miracle!

What if your prayer is not answered the first time?

[Tweet “Keep praying, keep asking, keep knocking and let God be God.”]

He will answer in His time, according to His will, and what is best for us at that time.

If Elisha had walked away after the first attempt at raising the boy, there would have been no miracle, no joy for that family and nothing recorded in the Word of God for us today. But because of his faith and persistence, God showed up and proved once again that He is God. He alone controls life and death!

[Tweet “Have you built a little chamber on the wall? Do you make time for God each day?”]

That was her way of allowing God into her life and today we can have him literally in our hearts by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Let Him be Lord of your life and begin to believe Him for great things in your life. You will be a living testimony in reaching others for the Kingdom.

She Mentors Truth…

Joining with #SheReadsTruth and #SheSharesTruth today for an exercise in sharing! We have been studying the book of Titus and the challenge was to answer these three questions:  How is spiritual mothering already taking place in your community? Has a godly woman influenced you in your growth in the Gospel, or has mentoring a young believer impacted your life? How would you like to see Titus 2 shape your relationships moving forward? Here we go!

Mentoring…yes, I looked it up in the dictionary. A mentor is a “…wise, trusted counselor or teacher.” That sums up perfectly my beginning remembrance of “Sister Sherlock”, my first Sunday School teacher that I remember having an influence on me. I do not recall how old I was in her class, but I know I was little, maybe five starting out.

To me, this lady was a picture of grace. She was elderly, ancient in my eyes, but at the time was probably only in her early 70’s. She seemed to float around the room, touching and encouraging and most importantly, loving. She was the epitome of Titus 2.

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

I remember feeling so safe, so protected and so very, very loved by this woman of God.

Later on, as I grew up, I had other women who shaped my life. One particular lady I was attached to as a young teenager helped me learn to pray. I watched her, I listened and I learned. Several years ago when I was under such a great attack from the enemy, I called her in the middle of the night, desperate for prayer and answers. She responded…with the Word! It made all the difference for me and has helped me be able to do the same for others! She is still a close, dear friend to this day.

In my late 30’s, raising My Three Sons, an air traffic controller’s wife, busy as youth pastors in the church, I was frazzled, to say the least. On top of it all, we were feeling the call to leave our safety and security and step out in the ministry full time. It was overwhelming.

Enter my lovely, Christian friend, Martha, or Mart as we called her.
A young hand touches and holds an old wrinkled hand

This woman, and her sister, Dellen, were blessings in my life! They were constant, never changing and not perfect. Yes, I said NOT perfect! That is what I loved about Mart.

She had one daughter and a husband but was never too busy to hear about ME. Did I need prayer? How was I doing? What could she do to help?

And laugh. She could make me laugh.

This godly Titus 2 woman was taken from us all too early. I will never forget one day I was at her house and Dellen and I were helping to give her a permanent! Oh, my, what were we thinking! Dellen wanted me to look at a mole on the back of Mart’s ear, she was concerned.

She was right.

Mart suffered so much with the treatments, the pain and the progression of the cancer, it was beginning to take a toll on her. The church rallied around her and supported the family with their prayers and love. We were all sure God would heal this woman because none of us could bear to lose her.

It was not to be and she was taken from us all too soon, shortly after her daughter’s wedding. If I remember correctly, it was less than two years later that Dellen, too, passed away. I have always marveled at that because I knew they couldn’t stand to be separated. They were two of a kind.

You are never too old to want, and need, a godly influence!

Since the Titus 2 study, I have thought long and hard about a mentor and pray that God would send one my way. I would also love to get back to the place where I would feel like pouring myself into someone younger.

My prayer is that God would make me pliable, useful and willing in all aspects of ministry and a “…teacher of good things”.

Borrow not a few!

Elisha Man of MiraclesBeginning a short series today on the prophet Elisha. I pray it is an encouragement to you and your faith will soar! Today’s story is of  the widow and the pot of oil in the book of 2 Kings, chapter four. There is such faith here on the part of the woman of God who has lost her husband, and so many great lessons for us to glean!

“A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, ‘Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.’”

Under Old Testament Law, if you could not pay your debt, or in this case, a husband leaves debt to his wife, you could be forced into bondage, taking on the role of a slave or servant! Here, it would fall to the sons to work off the debt of their father until the year of Jubilee, which came around every 50 years!

“So Elisha said to her, ‘What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?’ And she said, ‘Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.’”

Destitute didn’t begin to describe the situation. She had nothing.

[Tweet “God doesn’t ask for us to bring everything required for a miracle to the table.”]

He just wants us to ask in faith…believing! The widow had come to the man of God reminding him that her husband was also a follower of God Almighty. She knew God was able and had faith to believe He would supply her need.  “…Yet you do not have because you do not ask.” James 4:2.

“Then he said, ‘Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.’
So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.”
And he said to her, ‘There is not another vessel. So the oil ceased. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, ‘Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.’”

What do you think would have happened if she had come back with one or two vessels?

Was the miracle dependent on the amount of faith she had?

God would still have performed the miracle but she might not have had enough to pay all of the debt and she would not have had any left over for herself and her sons.

Borrow not a few!

As the saying goes, “Go big or go home!” She didn’t take the prophet lightly. She and her sons gathered as many as they could find, then began borrowing from their neighbors.

Had there been even more vessels, God would have filled those too. He gives more than we ask. She wanted enough to pay her creditors but God gave even more by supplying her family with sustenance for the days ahead.

But she also was not greedy. She didn’t fill her yard with jars and pots, only her house, and then shut the door, just she and her sons, to allow God to perform the miracle. She made sure she was alone with God; the Bible doesn’t even say Elisha was there!

This made sure the glory went to God, for He alone can perform the miracle!

What do you need to have filled today? He wants your empty vessel. He cannot fill you if you do not have room for Him! He will take your empty vessel, your talents, and your abilities and then He will use them for His glory. He can multiply until there are not enough vessels to contain the supply!

What can you believe for Him to do? Whatever the need, He is able. Bring before Him your empty vessel, empty of self-will, selfish desires, wants or greed. Then let the Lord fill that emptiness with Himself.

When God is all you have, then you will have more than you need.
