A Miracle Waiting in the Water!

Have you heard of the Abana and Pharpar syndrome? Naaman had it. He originated it, all because he did not want to humble himself.

Naaman was a “captain of the host of the king of Syria” and the Bible says he was a great man, honorable and a mighty man of valor.

But he was a leper.

Naaman’s wife had a “little maid” who was taken captive out of Israel and she was sympathetic toward her master and his condition. She told Naaman’s wife that if he were with the prophet in Samaria he would be able to heal him of his leprosy.

She was confident of the power of God and confident in the man of God!

This was told to Naaman and he eventually makes his way to the house of Elisha the prophet. Elisha sends a messenger to Naaman and tells him to “Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.”

Sounds simple enough, right? Not for Naaman…

“Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.” 2 Kings 5:11. This infuriated Naaman! He wanted pomp and fanfare to go along with his healing!

“Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? May I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.”                  2 Kings 5:12.

Abana and Pharpar were rivers that were closer to home and much cleaner than the muddy, nasty Jordan River. But there is so much more here than just two rivers that were nicer to take a bath in.

Doctors are well aware of the Abana and Pharpar syndrome. They see patients with this “disease” quite regularly. They make an appointment, then come in and tell the doctor all about their ailment. He listens, makes a diagnosis and then prescribes his “cure” or course of treatment.

“But wait! This is not what we wanted! We have researched this disease on the internet (everyone knows if you read it on the internet it has to be true!), and we want this treatment, this medicine, this way to feeling better.”

Abana and Pharpar syndrome.

The patient knows better than the Healer.

The patient wants to become the doctor, he tells the Healer how he knows a better way…

But it doesn’t work that way in the field of medicine and it doesn’t work that way with God either.

Naaman’s servants were much wiser than their master. They got together and went to Naaman and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do something great , would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, ‘Wash and be clean’?” 2 Kings 5:13 NKJV.

They definitely hit the nail on the head. If Elisha had come and stood before Naaman waving his magic wand and making a big show out of things before Naaman’s healing, he would have been thrilled! But he couldn’t do something as simple as washing in the river…there was no fanfare, no glory in the muddy Jordan!

His servants finally convinced him and he went down and obeyed, dipped himself seven times and “…his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean”. 2 Kings 5:14.

A Miracle Waiting in the Water

Obedience and humility were put into action and the miracle could then take place!

How many times have we been like Naaman with our own Abana and Pharpar syndrome? We have it all figured out for the Lord. “If you will do it this way, God, I will get what I want and everything will be just fine.”

We pray…but we pray with conditions.

We even tell God how it would work out best for us and instruct Him how to go about it.

Are we really allowing God to govern our lives? [Tweet “Do we really want the will of God or do we want our will to come out of His mouth?”]

If we will submit to our Lord in the beginning, humble ourselves before Him and let Him be in control of every facet of our lives, we can be sure of His blessing. We can be assured of His hand upon everything that we go to do…but we must be willing and obedient.

Humility and obedience. Those two things will negate the Abana and Pharpar syndrome! It takes the ME out of the picture and puts God in His rightful place.

Aren’t things so much easier when He is in control? He sees down the road!! He knows what is best! Naaman is proof…all he had to do was dip…seven times. Naaman thought it was foolish but God had bigger plans than just dirty bath water for Naaman.

He had a miracle waiting in the water.

What is the miracle or answer you are waiting for? Turn it over to God and let Him work it out for you!

Jesus is NEVER Moody!

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8

He’s not, you know… “moody”.

Never one time have I worried when I went before Him in prayer that He might be…

Bothered by me.

Irritated at me.

Bored because of me.

Disgusted at the sight of me.

Repulsed by me.

Shocked at me.

Annoyed around me.

Weary of me.

Exhausted with me.

Drained by me.

Appalled at the ME in me.

No, not one time has He ever made me feel any less than…

Loved by Him.

Cherished by Him.

Treasured by Him.

Blessed with Him.

Adored around Him.

Precious in Him.

Redeemed because of Him.

Saved by Him.

Beloved of Him.

Jesus Christ is merciful, that means He is full of mercy. He wants to give it to us, He longs to extend that Hand of Mercy to His children.

He doesn’t wake up in a bad mood. (He never sleeps!)

He is The Same.

Always.

Forever.

When I am weary, worn out, exhausted physically, emotionally and even spiritually, there is One I can run to and never worry about how I am going to be received.

Does that mean He ignores my mistakes, my failures and my sins?

No, there is repentance, then forgiveness, and His gentle hand reminds me that life is so much easier when I walk in His ways! But when I do fall, when I do stumble, He is there.

He doesn’t leave me in my failures!

What do you need today? A God that you can depend on? One that never slumbers or sleeps and is faithful no matter the circumstance?

Jesus is that answer. Because even though I may be…

Grouchy.

Whiny.

Irritable.

Depressed.

Touchy.

Snappy.

Pessimistic.

Demanding.

Challenging.

And even burdensome…(praying The Sweetheart skips this post!)… Jesus loves me anyway.

[Tweet “I cannot do anything to make Him love me less nor can I do anything to make Him love me more!”]

He just loves me!
And He just loves you too.

Thank you Lord, for being the same.

Jesus is never moody

You Can’t Purify the Water by Painting the Pump!

You can’t purify the water by painting the pump.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

Since the 4th century B.C., when Greek philosopher Aristotle referred to the heart as the most important organ in the body, it has stood as the one most closely related to our souls.

“If indeed from the heart alone rise anger or passion, fear, terror, and sadness; if from it alone spring shame, delight, and joy, why should I say more?” wrote Andreas de Laguna in 1535.

They quickly discovered the heart was the seat of our emotions even if it doesn’t look exactly like a Valentine. (It’s more like an upside down pear!).

Modern science refers to the heart as a pump, for that is what it does. It is a two stage pump that circulates blood throughout the body and carries away waste and impurities.

Even in our “sophisticated society” of the 21st century, we still talk about the heart when we are discussing anything that has to do with our feelings. We are “heart-broken” or “brokenhearted” and we have “heart to heart talks”. We can be heavy hearted, down-hearted, young at heart and half-hearted. And of course, we can’t forget “eat your heart out!” That one is a puzzler!

lark

What is amazing to me is that over 2,000 years ago, our Lord and Savior differentiated between the heart, soul and mind (or brain), when He referred to the heart as the center of all sentiment: “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.” Matthew 22:27, 28 NKJV.

But that heart can get tainted if the pump is not flowing properly. Our heart must be pure, holy and free of things that are not pleasing to God. We must strive to line up to His Word.

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

1 Corinthians 6:19, 20

This temple of the Holy Ghost cannot be taken care of as Tom Sawyer would have whitewashed a fence. It would only cover up for a little while, but eventually, after the winds and rains had come through, the weather would literally wash away the “coverup” and reveal the dirt that was hiding underneath all along!

The Pump hopeinthehealing

The Pharisees were like that. Check out Matthew 23:27, 28 NKJV: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”

They were all about the outside! The Bible says everything they did was for show, to be seen by men. These Very Important Pharisees wanted everyone to see them. They wore these scripture boxes, or phylacteries, on their sleeves, and around their foreheads. They believed the bigger they were, or the more attention they brought to the phylactery, the more righteous it made them. Their fancy robes had very large borders around the bottom with long tassels. To them, the wider the border, the more righteous the Pharisee!

If all we are doing is painting the outside of that pump, thinking that is going to make the well water taste sweet and pleasant to drink, friend we have a lot to learn. There is a little more work involved. We have to dig a well, clean out the impurities, purify that place, and make sure it is clean on the inside to match the outside!

What are some of the ways we can make sure our heart stays pure? Share your thoughts and insights with us today!

“Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”

Hebrews 10:22 NIV
