I Feel Him, God Is Here!

“I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” ~ Helen Keller

Some days you just know things are going to turn out right. Other days, well, there are plenty of “other days”.

We had just begun our outreach for the day in Riga, the capitol of Latvia, in Eastern Europe. We were a “green” team. All beginners, each a little scared in their own way. We had just finished our training and also completed our two weeks of prayer walks. We prayed in our neighborhoods around apartment buildings, parks, anywhere the Lord led, claiming them for the Kingdom. Now we were ready to “hit the streets” and practice what we had learned.

The plan was for the singers, with acoustic guitar, to start their worship songs in the plaza, as the other members of the team kind of mingled through the crowds watching for people who might seem interested in what was going on. If they stood still and watched for an extended period of time then one of us would approach them with a card and invite them to church.

It usually went something like this: “Hi, do you speak English?” (If they said ‘No’ it pretty much ended right there! Our Latvian had not progressed too far yet.) They usually responded that they spoke a little English, meaning that their English was fairly good. English is the international business language and is taught in the public schools in Latvia, so most anyone under age 30 speaks it fairly well, they just don’t think they do.

After that initial approach, we then complimented them on their English and asked if they were enjoying the music and then told them about our church, offered our card and invited them to visit our services, gave directions, etc. If they were open to more dialogue, of course we would entertain the conversation.

This particular afternoon The Sweetheart was in the crowd and I was singing. It was a very busy day and a lot of people in the center, I did not notice all that was going on but one particular young lady was standing off to the side watching the singing. The Sweetheart approaches her and asks if she speaks English. Very shyly she says, “Only a little…” He talks to her for a few minutes and invites her to the service for Sunday night trying to encourage her to come; he notices she seems interested, but a little hesitant, so he tries not to push too hard.

When Sunday evening service begins, I am at the piano when The Sweetheart comes and whispers in my ear, “She is here! And she has a friend!” He is nearly beside himself! I leave the piano and go to greet them both as service is starting, just as surprised as he is that they have actually come!

They seem to enjoy the service, they even gather around the front with the rest of the congregation at the end. But the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey would say, is one of God’s beautiful gems…

When Egita left “Doogalas” that day…that is what they call my Sweetheart in Latvia…she went immediately to see her friend Konstance at the jewelry store she works at just a few blocks away. Both girls had been desperately searching for a church and coming up empty, week after week.

Egita tells Konstance about this group in the park playing the beautiful music that drew her in and the “old man with white hair” who was so happy to tell her about Jesus and his church. She insisted that they visit on Sunday because she just had a feeling that it might be what they were looking for.

When they arrived Sunday night, the music started playing, the singing began and the worship went up before the Lord, Konstance grabbed Egita’s arm and said…

“God is here!”

They both knew they had found what they had been looking for!

They began to attend our mid-week House Church group and also started coming on Thursday nights to our English Club, which was a fun time of fellowship. We dearly loved these girls. They poured themselves into the Word and worked hard in the church.

One day Doogalas was working on a power point presentation and had pictures of places he had prayed over when he had taken his prayer walks weeks before. Egita saw the pictures and pointed out her apartment building. We didn’t know it but her building was one that we walked around and prayed over day after day because we felt such a burden for it! We were drawn to that particular apartment building for a reason and now we knew why! We were seeing the fruit of that labor, Egita was the reason!

We had another young man in the church that had been coming for quite some time but hadn’t made a start for the Lord. He handled some of the legal affairs for our church and was a good friend to our missionaries. He also began to attend our English Club group at our apartment. This was an outreach to Latvians and Russians to come and speak English, play English games, eat American food, etc. We had a group of about 8-10 at any one time coming of 21-30 year olds. We loved it!

We started noticing a few things blossoming and one evening I told The Sweetheart that I thought Martins and Konstance might be sweet on each other. I was so excited! Sure enough while we were gone to the States for Christmas they started dating. And last August The Sweetheart was privileged to fly back to Latvia to marry Martins and Konstance in a beautiful Latvian ceremony!

Even more wonderful is the news that Martins and Konstance are working together in the church to become pastor of one of the works there! God is so good!

So never underestimate the power of one to make a difference. Take that first step, God will honor it and you never know who will be touched, who will be saved and whose lives will be forever impacted because you were obedient!

Talk is Cheap!

“Talk is cheap. Words are plentiful. Deeds are precious.” ~ H. Ross Perot

Jesus backed up His words with actions. If we say we love God, and we say we love others, do we show it in our actions?

Jesus did.

“Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home! And the man jumped up and went home!” Matthew 9:4-7 NLT.

Good works do not save us, nor are they what it takes to “please” God. “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.” Matthew 7:21 NLT.

There is a wonderful lesson the Lord gives to the disciples concerning their faith in the Gospels. They have just witnessed the feeding of the 5,000+ with the five loaves and two fish. Jesus tells the disciples to go ahead of him in a boat to the other side of the lake while He sends the multitudes away. He then goes up on the mountain to pray.

But while He is alone praying, the boat gets caught in a storm. So in the fourth watch of the night, or about three in the morning, Jesus comes walking to them on the water…

“And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.’ And Peter answered Him and said, ‘Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.’ So He said, ‘Come.’

Now here is where things get interesting. Peter’s “talk” is about to get tested. He says he believes. All of the disciples just witnessed their Lord take a few loaves and a couple of fish and feed thousands of people! Now they are in trouble and they are even afraid. This same Jesus bids Peter to come to Him walking on the water! Well, what would YOU do?

“And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid…” I know Peter gets a lot of chastisement for his lack of faith once he was out on the water. But seriously, at least he stepped out of the boat! He didn’t just talk about it; he took a step of faith!

Yes, once out there, he faltered, but who did he call on?

“…and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’”.

He knew who could save him, who had the answers. But let’s not ignore the end of the verse: “Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:26-30 NKJV. He saved Peter even though he doubted. He didn’t let him down!

Now, we have the faith part covered. Back to the action!

“But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:17-18.

Again, talk is cheap! If you see someone in need but you do nothing about it, or as the New Living Translation puts it, “If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion-how can God’s love be in that person?”

I think that is pretty direct! How can God’s love even BE IN that person! If we ignore obvious needs, what kind of servants are we? “Let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”

So, does that mean that Christianity is all about service? That our mission here on this earth is all about feeding the hungry and putting shoes on the homeless? No, a thousand times no. We were put here to share the Gospel, the Good News. Do you know what that is? That Jesus Christ came, gave His life, suffered, rose again the third day and conquered death, hell and the grave!

Now He lives to bring us eternal life! We are to tell others that they need the Gift of the Holy Spirit residing in them, baptized in His name, according to the Book of Acts the second chapter, which is the beginning of The Church!

Then these “deeds” will come automatically! We will walk in newness of life! We will want to serve others! We will want to show compassion, feed the hungry, reach out to the lonely, and our actions will speak louder than our words.

Talk is Cheap

One is the Loneliest…

One is the loneliest, number, one is the loneliest number, one is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do

She was living through the separation of war. The hiding, the running, the whispers, the long trips in the middle of the night to avoid suspicion. It was cold; it was always cold.

Hungry. A little bit of bread, some cold meat, if it was a good day. Beans, maybe a cold potato. Her stomach had gotten used to the grumbling. She hardly noticed it anymore except when she tried to go to sleep, then it was like a gnawing inside that would not go away.

They still had each other…for now. But other families were not so lucky. The men always went first. They were taken by force, some never to be seen again. No reason, they were not guilty of anything other than being alive.

Being white.

Christian.

Jewish.

It didn’t matter.

They were taken.

So on they traveled, trying to get to a safe place. Was there such a haven? Would they make it in time?

But they did not make it, they were caught and sent to the worst place imaginable in those days…The Death Camps. Her first husband was sent to Auschwitz. Most never came back out of this horrific place. One of the most unspeakable concentration camps in Europe, thousands and thousands suffered horrible deaths there.

He never came home either.

Our friend and her family ended up in the camp at Novaky. She was one of the fortunate, she did make it out, (her parents did not), and she lived to tell about it.

And tell about it she did! She married the doctor from the concentration camp and they began a new life together in the U.S.  She turned her loneliness into a triumph over the death that tried to take her, and fought back by telling her story and the story of millions of others.

One doesn’t have to be lonely forever.

(This is a true story. I was privileged to meet this gracious lady, Erika Mandler, before she passed away several years ago. A book and a play were both made of her life. Both of the pictures below were taken in 2012 when I was in Poland and visited Auschwitz and Berkinau Concentration Camps. May we never forget.)
