Stand up for Jesus! The story behind the hymn…

“My basic principle is that you don’t make decisions because they are easy; you don’t make them because they’re popular; you make them because they’re right.”  ~Theodore Hesburgh

This is truly one of the saddest stories behind a well-known spiritual song. It takes place in 1858, just before the start of the Civil War. Dudley Atkins Tyng was an evangelist and an abolitionist who had just finished preaching a service at a mission in Philadelphia.  He held midday services at the YMCA where as many as 5,000 were known to gather at one time. On March 30, 1858, 1,000 men gave their hearts to God.

Some that were present at the last service that Tyng preached have shared that he said, “I would rather that this right arm were amputated at the trunk than that I should come short of my duty to you in delivering God’s message.”

Shortly after that compelling message, Tyng had went back to his farm to rest and was walking through his barn when he came upon a mule that was working a machine shelling corn. He reached out to pet the mule and when he did his shirt sleeve became caught in the cogs of the machine and quickly, and severely, lacerated his arm to the point of detachment.

There wasn’t anyone around to hear him call out and he became weaker and weaker as he lay on the barn floor. It was hours later when someone discovered the dying preacher. To the dismay of his family and friends, his wounds became infected and he did pass away a few days later. His last words to those around him were, “Tell them to stand up for Jesus.” He was only 33 years old.

George Duffield was one of his assistants at the time and was at the funeral service for Tyng.  At Temple Presbyterian Church the following Sunday he preached from Ephesians 6:14, “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.” He had penned the words to the hymn after Tyng’s death and had it sung at the close of the service.  It was soon printed in a Sunday School paper and became very popular as it was sung on both sides during the Civil War.

It seems as if every time you turn around someone wants you to support their cause. Some of them are good, some of them not-so-much.

But…

When you stand for Jesus sometimes you may stand alone.
When you stand for Jesus things might not just go your way.
When you stand for Jesus there will be persecution.
When you stand for Jesus you might lose friends.
When you stand for Jesus you might wind up in prison.
When you stand for Jesus you might be asked to deny Him.

Stand up for Jesus!

There is only one way to stand in this evil day and that is to have the power of the Holy Spirit working inside! He overcame and He has sent us the Comforter so that we could do the same. He even told us, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” John 14:12 ESV.

So even if it isn’t popular, even if it is dangerous, even if we are the only ones standing…

[Tweet “Stand up! Stand up for Jesus!”]

We can trust Him to be standing with us and regardless of the outcome we will inherit a crown of eternal life.

Stand up! Stand up for Jesus!
Ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high His royal banner,
It must not suffer loss:
From vict’ry unto vict’ry
His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished
And Christ is Lord indeed

Stand up! Stand up for Jesus!
The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict
In this His glorious day.
Ye that are men, now serve Him
Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger.
And strength to strength oppose.

Stand up! Stand up for Jesus!
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you;
Ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the Gospel armor,
And, watching unto prayer,
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never waning there.

Stand up! Stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long:
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor’s song:
To him that overcometh
A crown of life shall be;
He, with the King of glory,
Shall reign eternally.

Joy is a Fruit

#FiveMinuteFriday, friends, and the word prompt is JOY!! Share it, use it, live it out!

“Joy is the infallible sign of the presence of God.”
― Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Everybody wants to be happy. We want to have a nice home, nice cars, nice job, nice friends and a nice family so everyone will look at us and think we are happy…and nice.

But happiness is fleeting and it depends on our circumstances. If things aren’t going just right then we can’t be happy. If our job is questionable, our kids are brats and our house is falling apart then, most likely, we are not happy.

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Romans 14:17 NIV.

[Tweet “The Kingdom of God is not about things, not about going places or being somebody. It’s about Fruit.”]

Joy is a Fruit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law…” Galatians 5:22, 23.

Not an apple, banana or a kiwi but it is a Fruit of the Spirit of the Living God. Therefore it comes from God and God alone. When we are filled with His Spirit then the Fruits of the Spirit are produced in us and show forth as we grow and mature in the our relationship with God.

Joy is a state of being, a result of God’s work in us, the Spirit alive in us and allowing Him to have preeminence in every part of our lives! Joy is not happiness. We cannot always be happy but we can always be joyful if we are content in Him.

[Tweet “Happiness depends on happenings, joy depends on Jesus!”]

The disciples suffered much persecution for preaching the Gospel yet the Bible says in spite of that they would simply shake the dust off of their feet and move on…with joy! “But they shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 13:51, 52.

They were continually filled with joy and the Holy Spirit!

And we can be too.

No matter what is going on in your life, whether things are perfect or not-so-wonderful, there is JOY in knowing our salvation is in Jesus Christ and He will NEVER leave us, and NEVER forsake us but will be with us until the very end.

That fruit will grow and it will show others that your happiness is not in things, not in circumstances but in Jesus.

“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” Romans 15:13.

Praying you will be filled with Joy today by the power of the Holy Ghost!

God answers fearless prayer

Mesmerized. That’s how I describe my fascination with Joshua, the son of Nun.

This man was encouraged time and time again by God to be courageous and without fear.

“Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” Joshua 1:9.

“And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed…” Joshua 8:1.

Armed with that kind of courage, Joshua gathers forces to help the people of Gibeon in Joshua 10. The Gibeonites had made a treaty with Israel and because of that alliance the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces to attack Gibeon. Gibeon then sent word to Joshua for help.

God answers fearless prayer

Joshua didn’t just send a token group of fighting men, he marched with his entire army to defeat the five kings. The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”

Joshua is able to take them by surprise as the Lord brings confusion to the enemy. As they are running away from the Israelites the Bible says, “…the Lord hurled large hailstones down on them, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.”

But it’s the next part that is so unbelievable it had to be God!

On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
    and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still,
    and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar.” Joshua 10:12, 13.

The sun and the moon stood still! “The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!”

God answers fearless prayer

The Israelites were winning the battle but more time was needed to completely defeat the enemy. If they didn’t conquer them before dark they could possibly regroup and come back to attack the Israelites again the next day.

We won’t go into HOW it happened. Yes, we understand the EARTH is what does the orbiting, not the sun or the moon, but even today we say the sun rises and sets so it is not necessarily out of order for Joshua to address the sun and moon instead of the earth itself.

So, what can we take away from this miraculous event?

Courage.

Joshua was given his courage by Almighty God. Yahweh, Jehovah, the Maker of the Universe told Joshua on many occasions not to be afraid; He was always with him and He would fight his battles.

When Joshua realized he needed a miracle, he not only was without fear, he knew where his strength came from and where his backup forces would be! God had told him that none of the enemy would escape so with that confidence, Joshua didn’t hesitate to tell God just what he needed to finish the battle.

And God answered his fearless prayer.

What I like even better than the sun and moon standing still is that Joshua has learned so much from his faithful God that he passes it on to his followers. “And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.” Joshua 10:25.

Do those words sound familiar? Joshua is now encouraging the people with the same words that the Lord had used to give him strength and courage! He had seen Him do the impossible on more than one occasion, God was faithful in every battle. Now, with boldness, he could tell the people he was chosen to lead to put their trust in this God who never fails.

God answers fearless prayer

What kind of enemy are you facing today? Does it seem impossible for God to even show up?

Do you feel as if you need more resources, more time, or more courage to take up the fight?

Friend, you don’t have to! God wants to fight the battle for you and in the midst of the battle He wants you to be without fear. Cling to His promises found in the Word of God and put your trust in the God who delivers. Every. Single. Time.

The God of Israel is fighting for you!
