All for a cup of water

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.  ~Ambrose Redmoon

“These are the names of the mighty men whom David had:  Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of the three. He wielded his spear against eight hundred whom he killed at one time.” 2 Samuel 23:8

“And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them at one time.” 1 Chronicles 11:11

Josheb-basshebeth or Jashobeam (much easier to pronounce!), we are talking about the same person here, chief of The Three, David’s elite warriors.

There is no contradiction here in the two verses. Even the difference in names could easily be a nickname, or as we have middle names today and it could be just a variation of his name. Obviously, here in the two passages there is a huge difference in the number that he defeated, ahem, killed in battle. In 1 Chronicles it mentions he lifted up his spear to defend himself and killed 300 and in 2 Samuel it says he killed 800 at one time. Assuming these are two different instances, Jashobeam was certainly a fearless and mighty man. He wasn’t afraid to take on something bigger than himself.

If you thought that Eleazar, Shammah and Jashobeam were fearless on their own, look at what they did when they got together!

“During harvest time, three of the thirty chief men came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 2 Samuel 23:14-15.

This story is just amazing on so many levels. David and his Mighty Men were at the cave of Adullam and the Philistines were camping in the Valley of Rephaim. The Philistines had a garrison, or a permanent military post, inside the walled city of Bethlehem, the City of David.

David was battle-weary and so were his men. He was ready for the fighting to be over and in his state of exhaustion just uttered the words, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” He longed for the water from the well of his youth; he could almost taste it. But it wasn’t just the water that he was longing for; his statement was displaying how he wished for the battle itself to come to an end. The running, the hiding, the fighting had taken a toll on him and his men.

David didn’t command for someone to get him the water, he didn’t even ask, he knew it was impossible; it was just something he said, possibly just in a sigh of weariness. But Mighty Men don’t just sit around waiting for things to happen, they MAKE them happen and one of them, or all three, heard their king say he was thirsty and that was all it took.

Now picture this, Eleazar, Shammah and Jashobeam had to travel 12 miles to get this water! They had to break through the lines of the enemy to do it but they didn’t even think twice, they were on their way.

Risking their lives for a drink of water?

Oswald Sanders is credited for saying, “Courage is that quality of mind which enables men to encounter danger or difficulty with firmness. The highest degree of courage is seen in the person who is most fearful but refuses to give in to it.”

They weren’t doing it for the water, they were doing it for their king.

all for a cup of water 2

The Three were committed, they believed in their leader and if he wanted water they would get it. If he had uttered that he wanted steak on a plate? They would have gotten that too! They were all about unity and selflessness. It wasn’t about them, it was about one who was in need at the time.

So they accomplished the task and brought back the water for David. Now here is the interesting part: David will not drink it! “So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the LORD. “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it.”

Their act of bravery, of putting him first before their own lives so overwhelmed him that he cannot bring himself to even taste the water that he has longed for! He honored their sacrifice with his own by pouring it out as an offering to the Lord.

In a culture of selfies and so focused on what we see in the mirror, would we risk our lives to bring a cup of water to someone in need?

Risk Our Lives? Unity in the Body of Christ will bring about this type of sacrifice for others.

[Tweet “Relationship with Jesus Christ will cause us to put our wants and desires aside for the greater good of the Kingdom.”]

This is the picture of The Mighty Men of yesterday and of today; those that will risk their lives so that others might find deliverance from their pain and suffering here in this life and in the eternal one to come. This is the picture of those that want to give back to the One who gave so much.

What can YOU do today to be a Mighty Man or Woman of God to someone around you? Can we pray this prayer together? Lord Jesus, please make me sensitive to the needs of others around me that I might be willing to go the extra mile for their salvation. Send me to someone that is thirsty that I may offer them Living Water that only comes from You. In the Name above all Names, Jesus Christ. Amen.

How to Celebrate a Golden Birthday!

If you are under 31, you have celebrated your Golden Birthday whether you knew it or not. A Golden Birthday is when you turn the same age as your birth DATE; i.e., 17 on the 17th. Mine was a few years ago when I turned 20 on July 20th…okay it was 34 years ago but who is counting?

[Tweet “How to Celebrate a Golden Birthday!”]

This week we celebrated big when my middle son, Kristopher, turned 29 on the 29th. I was aware of Golden Birthdays but wasn’t sure how to pull it off. With the help of my youngest son, who was in charge of the meal, we got busy and decorated. In Gold. Lots and lots of Gold.

Celebrating a Golden Birthday

Birthdays are made to be golden!

This was our main focal point in the dining room. The party was at my son’s apartment so most of our decoration was right here in the center of the action. We also had golden streamers in the entryway of the townhouse, hanging from the open banister and also from the bar.

We went for the huge number balloons (a little expensive but worth it!), making trips to two different Party City stores to get the 2 and 9. When I finally arrived at their apartment, I was so proud to maneuver all of those balloons out of the car and up the stairs. Then I realized, to my horror, that #9 was not with us any longer. I ran outside to see where he had gone. That still makes me laugh, how did I think I would catch him, I couldn’t even see him as he had flown up and over Fishers, Indiana into the wild, blue yonder. Ten big ones down the drain.

We couldn’t have a 29th birthday party without a #9 so my wonderful chef paused what he was doing to run to Party City #3 to get a #9. My hero.

We had gold plates, gold napkins, gold confetti, (I forgot the cups). Everything was coming together…

I even bought gold Rolo’s, gold Reese Cups and gold Werther candies! Depending on what your theme is you could also go with Golden Oreos, Goldfish crackers, let your imagination wonder.

unnamed (2)I thought this was a great idea but didn’t get an after photo. Found this chalkboard on clearance at Target…in gold! Grabbed some chalk and streamers for the cubby decor and presto! As they entered the room there was a place for them to wish Kris a Happy Birthday and leave their card or gift. (not required!)

Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of the lasagna. It was not gold but it was certainly delicious. Korey makes some of the best lasagna I have ever eaten; it was a hit and disappeared quickly.

We saved Mandi’s amazing peanut butter pie until last. Pie for birthdays? Why not? Find out what the favorite dessert is of the birthday boy/girl and go for it. There are no rules! Mandi even had edible gold sprinkles for the pie which was already golden in color.

unnamed (1)And yes, if you are counting, there are only 20 candles on the pie. I was so excited to find gold candles I didn’t even think to see how many were in the pack. I don’t think he even knew it. Until now.

Korey and I spent the afternoon cutting out faces of all ages of Kristopher. I downloaded them, enlarged them all on my computer then went online to Office Depot and ordered just regular 8×10 copies of his face from infant to the present. I had them put on heavier card stock and then cut them out and glued them on over-sized popsicle sticks (Hobby Lobby).

After pie, we all picked a Kristopher that we wanted to be and posed for a group picture. The real Kristopher is in the red plaid shirt kneeling on the floor. Duh. It was great fun!

Me with the Birthday Guy!

unnamed (12)

Don’t forget, after age 31 there are no more Golden Birthdays but every birthday is special when you are surrounded by those that you love the most.

Holy Bathrobe! Happy Birthday Kristopher! (He was pretty excited about his Batman robe, he has great friends. What?! You’re jealous, right?)

unnamed (11)

Have you celebrated a Golden Birthday for yourself or someone else? What kind of things did you do or how did you decorate? We would love to hear!

The Prisoners Around You

“Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!” Acts 16:25-26 NLT.

The other prisoners were listening. Paul and Silas were in chains in this prison for preaching the Name of Jesus. To encourage themselves in their difficult situation they began to sing and to pray. This in itself is huge. They were not giving up, they were not recanting their story, they were not about to stop preaching Jesus. If it meant prison, persecution and peril then so be it. They had a mission and they were all over it!

So there they are surrounded by murderers, thieves, the undesirable and the unwanted who were intently listening to these two ministers of the Gospel. All of a sudden there is an earthquake. Not just any earthquake but the Bible says it is significant; powerful enough to shake the prison to its foundations and knock the doors open! That is fascinating enough but it goes on to say; “…and the chains of every prisoner fell off!” Not just the chains of the preachers but every one who heard them, who happened to be around them, in the same room, the same building, were affected by them!

Because they were not afraid and not ashamed to stand up for the Truth many others came to know Christ that day. They were listening, they were wondering, they were interested in Paul and Silas because they could not keep silent. They had something wonderful happen to them that had forever changed their lives and they couldn’t keep it to themselves.

We are today’s Paul and Silas.

  • Me.
  • You.
  • The Church.
  • The Body.
  • The Bride of Christ.

We were put here for this most important time in the history of The Church: The End.

We are living Acts 29, writing the final chapter.

The Prisoners Around You

Corrie ten Boom did. She made it her life’s mission to save others, physically and spiritually. She and her family hid many Jews from certain death but were eventually caught and punished. At the age of 52, Corrie was sent to a concentration camp where the rest of her family would perish. But while there, just like Paul and Silas, she sang praises to her God all day long. Saving others out of the fire, maybe not from death on this earth, but from eternal fire by offering them Jesus Christ.

“It is not my ability, but my response to God’s ability that counts.” ~Corrie ten Boom

The Prisoners Around You…They are hungry; some do not know what they are searching for but we have the answer. It is imperative that we point them to Jesus, make sure they understand they must be born again of water and of the Spirit. It’s not just for life eternal but what joy, peace and comfort comes from living for Him here! He is our hope, our reason for living and our joy for every day.

Let us bind together in prayer, go to war for the prisoners around us and be right in the middle of explosive revival when Jesus comes again.
