The Perfect Ten

It’s #FiveMinuteFriday of a different kind for me! This is simple but oh, so good. Hope you enjoy my take on “Ten”.

All three of My Three Sons have played the same part in a church Christmas play over the course of ten years or so. It was one of my favorites the very first time I heard it and I have never tired of it. Angels Aware has some of the best stick-with-you songs ever!

When my youngest, Korey Ross, now 23, played it about twelve years ago, he had strep throat. Had to leave practice the day of the first performance to go to the ER for meds. How he ever pulled off the lead with a temperature and strep is beyond me but he did it. Memories!

The Perfect Ten is a wonderfully simple rendition of The Ten Commandments in rhyme. In the play, ten children stood in a line and held up placards with their number on it when it came their turn in the song. So adorable because some of them would have the numbers upside down, inside out or just couldn’t quite get it to where it needed to be. Of course you pick the littlest ones for this song for sure audience approval!

But the message was never lost. Take a look at the words:

Number one, we’ve just begun, God should be first in your life (Matthew 6:33)
Number two’s the idol rule, those graven images aren’t right (Romans 1:23)
Number three God’s name should be never spoken in jest (Deuteronomy 5:11)
Number four the Sabbath’s for our worship and for rest (Isaiah 58:13)
Number five we all should strive to honor father and mother (Ephesians 6:1-3)
Number six don’t get your kicks from killing one another (Matthew 5:21-26)
Number seven life is heaven when you’re true to your mate (Romans 7:2)
Number eight don’t steal or break these rules for goodness sake (1 Cor. 6:9, 10)
Number nine don’t be the kind who goes around telling lies (Proverbs 12:22)
Number ten don’t covet when you see your neighbor’s house, or wife (Romans 7:7)
That’s the list that God insists we stay away from these sins,
That is why we memorize commandments one through ten!
The Perfect Ten, The Perfect Ten, they’re just as good as they were way back when
The Perfect Ten, The Perfect Ten, let’s say them once again…

They are perfect because they were God-breathed, God-inspired and written by the finger of God!

Many say that the Old Testament is not for us today. Of course we no longer participate in animal sacrifice, thank goodness, but these rules, these guidelines and commandments are still to be taken seriously in our walk with the Lord.

Enjoy the song and dwell on the verses today as we strive to be more like Jesus and share Him with a lost and dying world! And if you were ever in Angels Aware, what part did you play and do you remember the songs??

Today, everything is FREE!

Free is good. Free is always good!

I remember several years ago (can you say Vintage ’80’s?!) my sister-in-law, Sue, (who has written for us here, here and here!) won a contest at a local grocery store. She had so many minutes, (seemed like it was three), to fill her grocery cart with as much merchandise as she possibly could. If she could cram it in there and get back to the checkout in the limited amount of time then she could keep everything she had managed to squeeze in.

Oh my, I was there that day. People were cheering her on and hollering out what to buy or what to put back. The store was not a mega supermarket; it was a small grocery chain at the time, which also meant it wasn’t a Walmart SuperCenter or a Super Target, only normal grocery items. They actually stopped everything in the store, no one was allowed to shop and no one was working; all eyes were on Sue and what she could get for FREE.

Pack it in she did! She was smart and had thought ahead, or maybe her husband had thought for her, but she went for the high value items: Huge roasts, steaks and chops, mega-size laundry detergents and softeners (did you see the Top Job floor cleaner?), and some frozen foods. She sure didn’t waste her time on the little and insignificant things that you can buy every day, she went for things she wouldn’t normally grab or for those that were considered special for certain occasions.

What about you? Do you come in expecting to pay, over and over again, for something Jesus already gave His life for?

Friends, He paid the ultimate price and now Jesus welcomes us to come in, grab a cart and fill it up with everything He has to offer: Peace, joy in the Holy Ghost, comfort, righteousness, eternal life and so much more! He invites us to be free from anxiety, worry, fear, nervousness, dread, burdens, questions, distractions, weights and anything else that keeps us from getting rest and enjoying the life and freedom He has promised us.

We can have every,  single promise that is in His book directed to us. He holds nothing back!

[Tweet “We are only limited by the misguided notion that we can do it better than the One who created the universe.”]

Or maybe our lack of belief that He will do what He said he will do!  We end up paying for our mistakes, sometimes more than once. That is not freedom, friends.

“In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free.” Psalm 118:5.

[Tweet “What are you holding back from God today that is keeping you from getting everything FREE?”]

What kind of price are you willing to continue paying for yourself or your family when you could be FREE?

“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:13-14.

Imagine living as though every day,  you got up, grabbed your cart and said, “What do you have for me today, God? Fill up my heart with all of You and your attributes that I might go out and share it with others.”

Picture Sue in that grocery store loading up on all the good things of God instead of groceries! Then, go, fill up your cart in the morning and distribute it all day long. Go to bed, get up and repeat!

The struggle is real

The caterpillar does all the work but the butterfly receives all the publicity. ~ Unknown

I’ve been fascinated by the butterfly lately (or the flutter-by as I used to refer to it when My Three Sons were little).

Maybe you have heard the story of the young man who found a cocoon and sat down to watch the butterfly emerge. He could see the creature through the thin, silk-like material of the shell trying to break free, but to the young man it seemed as if it was taking too long. The butterfly had worked and worked and didn’t seem to be making much progress, even after a couple of hours. He decided to help it along and took out his Eagle Scout pocket knife with scissors (talk about being prepared) and cut an opening for the struggling insect. Immediately the butterfly hobbles out but his wings were wet and his body was swollen. The young man thought that with a little time the swelling would go down, the wings would dry and he would fly off like any other butterfly.

But he never did.

He spent the rest of his pitiful life in that shape for one reason: He needed to go through the struggle! Even though it seemed as if the butterfly was not making any progress he was slowly getting rid of the liquid in his body. A caterpillar turns to all liquid before it morphs into a butterfly! During the struggle to exit the cocoon it gets rid of that fluid, and while fighting to get freem it becomes strong and ready to fly.

Look at the changes and the complexity of the life of a butterfly BEFORE it is even born:

  • The eggs are laid on plants that the caterpillars will actually eat later. The size of a pinhead, each egg contains one caterpillar.
  • Next, the larva or caterpillar emerges and begins to eat immediately. That is all this interesting creature does: eat! But while it is eating its skin gets tighter and then it will shed that skin and emerge with new skin. They change skin four times! When this hairy guy is finished growing it is about two inches long.
  • Then it begins the Chrysalis or Metamorphosis which takes 7-10 days. It will find a safe place to rest and a silk thread will come out of a hole below its mouth from where it will spin a silk pad to attach to. She will hang from this pad and its skin will eventually split open revealing the chrysalis or pupa.
  • The coolest things are going on inside the chrysalis: it is becoming completely liquid to transform into a butterfly. The struggle begins as it pushes against that case opening and begins to fight its way out.
  • Did you know that the life span of a Painted Lady Butterfly is only two weeks? Some can live up to a month and a few species survive up to a year. But most have a short life span. In that time period it is busy. It has one goal and that is to lay its eggs so that the cycle can be repeated all over again.

A butterfly coming out of its cocoon gains its strength, determination and fortitude all in the struggle! The butterfly pushes all the fluid out of its body and into its wings enabling it to fly. Without the struggle, he would never get off the ground and would come out with a swollen body and wet wings. He would hobble around like that for the rest of his short life. And the beauty of this insect? Unsurpassed and marveled by all!

And there we are.
The struggle is real butterfly

The struggle is real. Struggling through our days, weeks and years thinking we are making no progress, everything is just HARD!  But we don’t realize that the struggles purify us, make us strong and give us wisdom and sensitivity to others around us. Tried in the fire, we burst forth as the beautiful creature God intends and touch others around us who are watching us through our struggle.

A friend said that God calls us to do hard things sometimes but always has prepared the way before us.

Sometimes we are like the butterfly inside the cocoon but WE have the scissors and want to hurry the struggle along ourselves. We think we don’t need to go through a difficulty or what we would call a trial because we have done this before, been through this situation and we know how to handle it.

[Tweet “Sometimes we think we know what is best for us even better than the God who created us.”]

How can that be? Look at a few of these words from the Word of God:

Romans 5:3-5. “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering  produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love  has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Rejoice in our sufferings, our struggles. Why? Because that struggle is producing something inside of us that is beautiful, defines our character and gives us hope. They make us strong and full of wisdom, knowing that whatever we face, God is with us, and in the process, He is molding us and making us into vessels fit for the Kingdom.

[Tweet “There is purpose and strength in the struggle!”]

Is there more?

Yes! Romans 8:18. “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

And in James 1:12:  “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

We may struggle here, we might even feel like we are trapped in our cocoons forever and that God doesn’t hear us or doesn’t care. But we must be patient and determine to see what He wants us to learn in the struggle, in the difficulty, in the PUSH.

Friends, we trust Him even in the struggle. He will fulfill all of His promises if we work through the difficulties, trusting in His Word.
