31 Days of Devotions and Encouragement for your Fast

Happy New Year! We celebrated 2019 waltzing into our lives with one of our granddaughters, Norah Jayne. We bought noisemakers at the dollar store and you would have thought it was Christmas all over again.

A New Year brings new possibilities and fresh starts and the hope of finally “getting it right this time.” So we make resolutions that usually are forgotten before the month is over. We determine we are going to read more, especially our Bible. We are going to be intentional when it comes to our walk with God. But life gets in the way and before we know it we are right back in 2018.

It doesn’t have to be that way this year! If you are reading  this you have likely decided to fast in January. Maybe your church is doing a corporate fast, which just means they are doing it together. And there is your key to victory: fasting. It doesn’t change God, it changes you! Fasting for the right reasons will reset your focus and desires and get you on the path to “getting it right”.

For the month of January, Hope in the Healing is committed to helping YOU as you fast and pray unto the Lord. Some are beginning The Daniel Fast today or next week, we will be talking about that too. Others are fasting social media or things that are a vital part of the way they spend their time. All of them are good!

For those that are choosing The Daniel Fast, it is typically a 21 day fast. Very few actually begin on New Year’s Day so we will start with the first three days explaining the need for fasting, different types of fasts and more details about The Daniel Fast in particular.

The Daniel Fast DevotionalTo help you even further on your journey, I encourage you to get my book, The Daniel Fast Devotional! It is a great tool for ANY TYPE OF FAST. 21 days of devotions, examples of others who fasted in the Bible, why they fasted and what we can learn from it. It’s available at Amazon.com here. I also offer discounts for multiple purchases, email me at ynannette@gmail.com for pricing!

Even the early Church fasted and prayed regularly after they received the Holy Ghost. We have a continual war going on between the carnal and the spiritual that will not end until after the Lord comes back for His people, the final battle is fought and Satan has been put in his place. Forever.

In order to be overcomers while we are living in this world, we must have a relationship with Jesus Christ and we must learn how to pray and fast to keep our bodies, our flesh, under subjection.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10 KJV.

Fasting will kill that inner man. You will be filled with the power of God so you may be able to overcome.

The most important thing is that you take that time that you would normally be eating and spend it PRAYING!

Fasting together in January Series!

When the Church is fasting, the enemy is intimidated. Satan isn’t worried one bit when we are content with the status quo. But if the Church ever realizes the power it possesses through prayer and fasting, the devil would be on the run.

His Word says some things only come about by prayer and fasting. “And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could we not cast him out? So he said to them, This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:28, 29 NKJV

Fasting puts Satan in his place! And through fasting, you can take back your God-given spiritual authority over your life.

Fasting can literally change you from the inside out. It will draw you closer to God, help you see things about yourself that you need to change, allow God to dig out the ugly and replace it with His grace, and lift those heavy burdens from you that you just don’t need to carry or worry about any longer.

Let’s do this together! Join me for the next three weeks and encourage one another in fasting and prayer. Unity in the Body is necessary for the revival we want to see happen in our families and communities. Blessings to you as you fast unto the Lord.

Let’s stop ignoring the Elephant in the room

Andrew Murray (1828-1917) was a pastor and an author from the villages of South Africa where his father had begun the work many years earlier.

When he was 78 years old, Murray finally resigned from the position of pastor and for the next eleven years he gave his life to writing manuscripts, hurriedly finishing one and beginning another. He said that he felt as if he was a hen about to hatch an egg; he just could not rest until he released that burden, the message that the Lord had given him.

It is said that when he was in quite of bit of pain from a previous back injury, he was resting to try and regain his strength when he was told there was a woman that had a real need and desired an answer to her problem.  Andrew Murray gave her the paper he had been writing on and said, “Give her this advice I’m writing down for myself. It may be that she’ll find it helpful.”

This is what he wrote:

In time of trouble, say, “First, he brought me here. It is by his will I am in this strait place; in that I will rest.”

Next, “He will keep me here in his love, and give me grace in this trial to behave as his child.”

Then say, “He will make the trial a blessing, teaching me lessons he intends me to bestow.”

And last, say, “In his good time he can bring me out again. How and when, he knows.”

Therefore, say, “I am here by God’s appointment, in his keeping, under his training, and for his time.”
–Andrew Murray

Trials.
Hardships.
Persecutions.
Senseless attacks on innocent civilians.
Executions in the name of a false god.
People that are willing to take their own lives while killing as many as possible before they die.

This is the type of enemy we are facing today. We can no longer look at this war as something going on across the pond. The refugee crisis is real. The refugee crisis is now our problem, not just Europe’s. There are many, many innocent people who have fled the violence in their own country, seeking safety for their families. But inside that Trojan horse the enemy has also infiltrated and found a way to blend in and our problems have just begun.

It isn’t just Paris, we hurt for all lives who are being affected by terrorism! Maybe the tragedy in Paris feels closer to home, not literally of course but that doesn’t mean we are not affected or burdened for all of the other senseless acts of terrorism in other countries. Paris is not more important by any means but maybe Paris will help us to wake up and realize we cannot ignore it any longer.

Let's stop ignoring the elephant in the room

We know what is happening but the obvious is so ludicrous that our minds cannot comprehend the reality: our own government is now allowing our nation to be infiltrated with Islamic extremists who are bent on destroying each and every one of us and mercy is not in their vocabulary. ISIS also attacks and tortures fellow Sunni and Shi’a Muslims who do not adhere to the extremes of their religion! No one is exempt to this terrorist agenda, everyone is an infidel.

We have read our Bibles, we know these are the last days, the very last days, and Jesus warned us of what would come upon us. And yet it always seemed to be in another lifetime, we just weren’t quite sure how it would all play out.

But now we know.

We have met the enemy and he hates with a hatred that shocks and intimidates us. As Christians, people who are taught to love and include, how do we react and what should our focus be?

Perhaps if Andrew Murray were here today he would respond similarly as he did to the woman so many decades ago, with a little modification:

In time of trouble, say, “First, he brought me here. It is by his will I am in this strait place; in that I will rest.

It is true that God doesn’t go seeking for things to put upon us as His people. But we live in a real sin-filled world and just as Jesus was persecuted, the disciples were persecuted and thousands upon thousands of Christians down through the ages were persecuted, we will likely not be exempt! The good news is that our God is with us, in that we can rest. We will not walk alone.

He will keep me here in his love, and give me grace in this trial to behave as His child.

Do you believe that? He will give us GRACE to stand in the evil day. And not just stand but to BEHAVE as HIS CHILD. We may not be spared the taunts, accusations and violence that may be right around the corner but we also do not respond with the same. We do not flood social media with hatred but we also do not hide our head in the sand and hope it goes away. We spend time in prayer so that the Holy Spirit is able to work through us and guide us with His wisdom.

He will make the trial a blessing, teaching me lessons he intends me to bestow.

We have found that to be true, if we have lived for God any length of time. If we had never had a trial we would never know that He could step in and perform miracles or give us the peace and comfort we need to get through any given situation.

How can He turn persecution into a blessing? In the 11th chapter of 1 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul listed some of the suffering he had endured, read that here.

But then he tells us that he was also given a thorn in the flesh that he asked the Lord to remove from Him…but He did not. So he continues, “…And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” 1 Corinthians 12:8-10.

When I am weak, then I am strong.

Stephen, the disciple, gave his very life while calling on the name of the Lord. They literally beat him to death with stones and yet they could not help but notice his countenance while he lay there dying. (You can read his inspiring story here!)

Even while being stoned to death, he was not forsaken, he saw the Lord and had the strength to ask for forgiveness for his persecutors! Being full of the Holy Spirit brings supernatural strength from the heavens!

In his good time he can bring me out again. How and when, he knows.

Yes, He can, yes He does. But if He doesn’t? Just as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego said, “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” Daniel 3:17-18.

Even if He does not deliver, we will stand, knowing that He will carry us over to the other side. We will not deny the name of Jesus, we will not serve other gods!

Naturally, we pray the scripture in Revelation, “Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus.” (words we never thought we would pray!) But if He doesn’t take us out of here before we face such unimaginable times, we know if we have the power of the Holy Ghost, which is Christ IN us, we can hold on and stand in the evil day.

As Andrew Murray encouraged Christians in another lifetime, we can take those words and apply them to our situation today, leaning on the Word of God as our anchor and strength.

Let’s stop ignoring the Elephant in the room

We cannot fret about being politically correct and worried that someone is going to be offended somewhere. They will. Jesus surely was not politically correct! He ruffled feathers everywhere He went and in these last days He will be with those that stand for truth and righteousness. We know we cannot stop the end from coming or the ugly that accompanies it but it is our job to BE the Church and reach with love for as many as we possibly can before the Lord returns for His bride.

There are no accidents with God. He didn’t choose the apostles and disciples to be here for this endtime but He chose YOU and ME to carry His message to a lost and dying world. We are to show the love of God, and share the Good News that Jesus saves, in everything we do! And remember He will be with us to the end. No matter what.

As you move that elephant out of the way, remind yourself:

“I am here by God’s appointment, in his keeping, under his training, and for his time.”

Treasures in Clay Jars

“We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” 2 Corinthians 4:7.

The Israelites used clay jars and pots to hold just about everything around the house. Some held everyday necessities such as flour and grain and in others they stored their cooking oil, which was an important staple in the pantry. Other bigger jars held utensils and tools. Some were for carrying water. But they weren’t always used for the most pleasant of tasks. There were the unmentionables too.

Clay pots and jars were breakable, they were expendable and they were easily replaceable.

They cracked, and they still used them. If they broke they could still use the shards for writing utensils.

Even the Dead Sea Scrolls were found stored in clay jars!

The scribes that copied the scrolls were dedicated to such accuracy that even if there was one mistake the entire scroll was thrown into the fire.

They could not allow for that manuscript to be found and read and compromise the Word of God to be copied incorrectly later. When a scribe had completed one accurately, they then stored it in a clay jar.

So why did the Lord choose something that to us seems so cheap, fragile and crumbling to hold something so valuable? Because of exactly what it says in verse 7, “We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.”

Spilling out the treasure

If He had put it in a fancy treasure box overlaid with gold then the focus would have been on the vessel and not what was inside!

We don’t want them to be impressed with US but with the real TREASURE that is inside. He chose a simple jar of clay to house the glorious LIGHT of the Gospel.

The first century clay jars and pots hid their treasures and contained their necessities, but our treasure is for the entire world to see!

A jar of clay is not very sturdy, if it falls over it will probably break. That shows how dependent we are upon God. It is HIS power, not our own, that we must rely on. We are not these fancy jars that cannot break just HOLDING clay, but we are cracked and vulnerable jars that are MADE of clay. And yet we are holding God’s richest and most glorious treasure!

“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:27-31.

The enemy thinks that he can put cracks in our jars and cause us to stumble and fall. He thinks that will weaken our resolve, but the Apostle Paul says, That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10.  When our clay pot gets pushed around, bumped, bruised and cracked what happens? What is inside comes pouring out! When we are “hard pressed, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down”, we spill out the very presence of Jesus Christ and fill the room with His aroma! We then draw attention to Him!

But if we are never pushed, shoved, or knocked around, then the treasure just sits there. It is never shared. It stays hidden. The temptations and trials that come along in our lives do not mean we have been abandoned by the Lord or that He doesn’t love us. Quite the contrary! I don’t believe the Lord puts things on you but I do believe He can make something good out of them. It is because He BELIEVES in YOU as His treasure holder who spills out His presence that He allows these things in your life!

Sometimes the problem is that we can become whiners when trials come and the stuff that we spill out of our jars doesn’t look like Christ, it doesn’t smell like Christ and it sure doesn’t taste like Christ. It’s because we’ve never learned, or we’ve somehow forgotten, that we are clay jars FILLED with Christ!

Instead of being a cracked jar leaking a TREASURE that points others toward Him, we have simply become whiney “crack pots”!

Who wants to be around a grouch?! Who wants to surround themselves with a know-it-all? Someone that isn’t teachable? Someone that is constantly complaining and finding fault? Someone that has to be in charge all the time and have their way?

God is not pleased.

The pressures in life that crack our jars only prove to make us stronger! And those cracks then cause that light to seep out and shine so that others might be impacted and changed by our lives. The jar isn’t what we should be occupied with. It’s what’s inside that really matters!  “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.  Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-10.

God Himself, living within us, and bringing life wherever we go! He is our treasure and we are not to keep Him to ourselves. The Gospel was meant to be spread. And those cracks in our jars were meant for that Gospel to seep out and that LIGHT to go into the entire world.

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.” Isaiah 60:1. So we are called to be children of LIGHT in a world of darkness and the LIGHT of God is in us, in jars of clay.

Thank Him for our cracks!

God trusts YOU with His treasure. He didn’t leave Paul, Peter, John, Matthew, or any of the disciples here for the End-time to usher in last day revival! He left YOU! He trusts YOU! You can’t afford not to share your light! We have a responsibility and we must go out and do our part. There are people in your world waiting for you to let your light seep out of your cracked pot and let them see Jesus in you.

Will new life come to someone this year because Jesus has been seen in your life through a broken jar of clay?
