When a whisper is enough

It’s #FiveMinuteFriday! Today’s word prompt is WHISPER…be blessed!

GO!

Elijah was afraid.

The Bible tells us he was terrified of the evil Jezebel who promised to hunt him down.

So he runs away and asks the Lord to take his life, he has come to the end of his rope. Thankfully the Lord doesn’t answer his prayer, Elijah is one of the few men we know that did not die; he was carried away by God into the heavens. But an angel of the Lord visits him and gives him food for strength and he goes on that nourishment another forty days as he journeys to Mt. Horeb.

Once there, the Word of the Lord comes to him and says, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” 1 Kings 19:10 NIV.

The Lord tells him to go and stand on the mountain and Elijah is about to encounter Almighty God!

“And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but theLord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.” 1 Kings 19:11-12 NIV.

Elijah saw a mountain torn and rocks broken into pieces, but the Lord was not in that. He saw an earthquake but it says the Lord wasn’t in that either, nor was He in the fire. But after the fire there came a sound of a low whisper…the King James translation say it was a “still small voice”.

whisper

Can you imagine hearing the whisper of God? Would it be enough for you?

Elijah felt as if he was the only one in the entire world who still stood for the Lord God of Israel. He was sure everyone else had forsaken Him and turned to idols. It certainly looked that way.

He was ready to give it all up.

God came in a whisper, in a still, small voice, reassuring Elijah that He was with Him. He had power; He let Elijah see that too.

But his assurance was in the comfort that the mighty God who had sent the wind, earthquake and fire was powerful enough to just WHISPER and make everything alright.

Is it enough for you? Can you stand on the whisper of God? Can you trust Him in all things, knowing He is WITH you, IN you and FOR you just by His gentle whisper?

Have you discovered you can whisper HIS name and He will show up?

I have been sitting with a friend this week that is not well. She has little strength and needs help with just about everything. It hurts to breathe, it hurts to move, it hurts to hurt! But when the pain is intolerable, and seems to overwhelm, she whispers, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, come help me, Lord.”

And He does. Every time. We have prayed every night when she is in such pain that would keep many awake and instantly He calms her and rest comes.

That is our God! He comes when He hears His name! If all you have is a whisper that is all you need. He is already IN you and He shows up, bringing just what you need for that moment, just in time.

Don’t sell Him short, build the kind of relationship with Him that you desire for Him to be with you, to have the Holy Spirit IN you, alive, breathing and whispering to you, “Peace be still. All is well.”

Stop.

I love that we serve a God with immense, unmeasurable power and yet He whispers to our souls. I love that we can utter a whisper to Him and He hears. Thank you for this beautiful reminder today. (Linking up from Holly Barrett). Blessings to you and yours.

Yes so true, we need to pause to hear Gods whisper. The blessing being that in times of fear, aloneness or illness we have an anchor.
    Thanks for your words.

Okay, okay, I don’t always look at the clock, lol. But yes, I can type over 100 wpm! So, yes, I could TYPE it all in five minutes or less but not sure the thoughts all came that quickly. 🙂 And then I have to have an image, ha, hope they don’t kick me out!

Thank you Sharon for your insight. I love what you said that a whisper can only be heard when someone has draw very, very close…so true! I thought of the kids game where you whisper to one and then they pass it down, it is never what it started out to be. Blessings friend for a great week! ♥

A whisper IS enough! The only perfection I’ll ever know is in JESUS CHRIST! Thanks for everything, Nannette!

I’ll say a prayer for your friend this morning. Perhaps in the midst of our fear and pain we are best prepared to hear God’s whisper.

I love this scene with Elijah and the Lord. Sometimes I find myself wanting the *big* appearance of God, coming like a thunderstorm to fix everything that’s wrong in my life. But, more often than not, He arrives in a whisper. But, a whisper can only be heard when someone has drawn very, very close to you. And yes, with God that is more than enough.

    GOD BLESS!

(By the way, I am amazed at how much you can type in 5 minutes! Are you a speed typist?!)

Indeed a whisper from the power that sustains this world is enough. How easily we forget that all the breaths of all the people are supplied by God Himself. Thanks for the silent, yet profoundly powerful reminder.

That is a beautiful passage of Scripture and I think you presented it beautifully as well. God often whispers to me rather than out-shout all the other voices so that I can find peace. Thank you for writing this today!

So true, Nanette. And sometimes, I hear a whisper-shouted! That’s when He wants to whisper it lovingly, but cannot get my attention so he “shout-whispers!

I believe many do not hear the whisper of God because they do not take time to stop, be still, and listen.
What a blessing that your friend is able to whisper to God, and believe that He will answer her whispered call. I wish all the best for your friend in her illness.
