The Promise

Day 3 of the 31 Days of Christmas…we are preparing our hearts the entire month of December. Not to unwrap presents but to enjoy the Reason for the Season and celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ! This week we are discovering some of the people who are linked to the lineage and genealogy of the Savior and how we can compare and contrast their lives to our own. You can catch up Day One, super short, and Day Two first if you like, they will open in a different window. I will wait for you…31 Days of Christmas hopeinthehealing“What was that promise again, Abraham? It’s been so long!”

“I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly…and you shall be a father of many nations.” Genesis 17:1,2 NKJV.

“Oh yes, but there is more!”

“Yes, Sarah, there is more…”

“As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.” Genesis 17:15, 16. NKJV.

That was The Promise Sarah was waiting on…the one that concerned her the most. This Promise caused Sarah to laugh when it was prophesied over her, and then in shame she denied her laughter.

Abraham and Sarah waited for The Promise, their promise was physically impossible! They were beyond child-bearing age, they had never had a child of their own together. Here they were approaching the century mark and Almighty God tells them they are to have a child!

Not only would they have a child but the Lord tells Abraham he would be the father of a great nation, of many nations, his descendants would be innumerable.

We know they received their promise, the child. “And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken. For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.  And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—Isaac.” Genesis 21:1-3 NKJV.

But what about the other part of The Promise? Did not the Lord vow to make him a “father of many nations”?  “This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham:  Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob… (skipping way down…) Matthan was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

There is Abraham, the father of Isaac, the father of Ishmael too. But, more importantly, the father of many nations, just as the Lord had promised!

Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah.” Matthew 1:1-17 NLT.

You mean there is more?

“That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles, through Jesus Christ: that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Galatians 3:14.

The Promise hopeinthehealing

That blessing of Abraham was surely to be the father of many nations and he brought forth The Promise, Jesus, through his bloodline! That is our blessing (the Gentiles)! What a hope! What a promise!

(Of course we know that it didn’t stop with the Baby in the manger, but that Promise of the Spirit now resides IN us, the Gift of the Holy Ghost is Jesus Christ alive inside of us, leading, guiding, comforting, protecting, and walking with us each and every day!)

As exciting as this is, many of these great patriarchs that we talk about may have never realized their place in history! They were just following the will of God.

The lineage of Jesus is full of people like Abraham, great and mighty leaders who made a difference in their world, impacted nations and changed the course of history. They are listed in the ancestry of Jesus, the Messiah!

In it you will also find amazing people like Rahab, (see Day 2’s post here) just an ordinary person who recognized the God of Israel to be like no god she had ever come in contact with before! Because of her curiosity, she risked her life to save herself and her family and she too, alongside great men like Abraham, is listed in the genealogy of Jesus Christ!

It’s not about what we do today, not about the glory we receive. It’s about walking with Him daily, walking in The Promise!

What is the promise that you are waiting for? How about if  what you are doing today, walking with Him, following His leading, IS your promise? At least for now?  I heard a long, long time ago that whatever place I found myself in, until God moved me or told me to do otherwise, that WAS His will, so walk in it! Work in it!

[Tweet “There is plenty to be done right where you are, so until He says otherwise; this is the will of God for your life!”]

Is there something from God that you have waited years for an answer? Don’t give up! Remember Sarah! At 90 years old the Lord promised her a child, is there anything too hard for God?!

Are you wondering if your ministry is of any value? Will it make a difference in anyone’s life? Remember Abraham! Generation after generation, times thousands of generations, and here we are today still modeling our lives after this hero of the faith.

I would love to hear your thoughts today on The Promise. What do you see in Abraham and Sarah? Are you struggling with a promise of your own? I would love to pray with you! Remember the Reason for the Season…Remember Jesus.

What’s My Line?

The Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke both record the Genealogy of Jesus, although we will find they are very different indeed.

I am jumping into deep water this week, I do not claim to be a theologian. But by God’s grace, and maybe some constructive criticism if needed, I hope to help us to see the wonderful lineage of our Lord and Savior. He didn’t just happen into this world; God had a plan and that plan is one of the most miraculous stories ever told!

Come along with me on this journey the next 31 days as we discover how Jesus came, why He came, and where you and I fit into the glorious picture of this holiday we call Christmas.  Along the way we will meet ordinary people who did extraordinary things and became a part of the lineage of the Messiah, the Savior of the World! You can see yesterday’s kickoff here.

The Book of Matthew traces the lineage from Abraham to Jesus, which is 41 generations. Luke, on the other hand, records it from Adam to Jesus, for a total of 76 generations.

Matthew’s account is divided into three groups of 14: The patriarchs, the kings, and then the regular citizens. Luke actually begins with Jesus and goes backward!

Does it really matter? What is so important about the ancestry of Jesus? What can we find in his “roots” that would tie into our 31 Days of Christmas study? Does it have anything to do with preparing our hearts for the coming of the Christ child?

Oh yes, a resounding, “Yes!”

The Gospel of Matthew was written to prove that Jesus was the Messiah and he opens his book by showing proof that Jesus was who He said He was. Look at the first chapter.

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon.  Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David the king.” Matthew 1:1-6 NKJV.

Recognize any familiar names? Of course there is Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the founding fathers. We cannot forget their contribution to it all! But how about some of those that were maybe the undesirables, those that you wouldn’t necessarily think were “Kingdom Makers”. How did they get listed in the genealogy of the Messiah?!

what's my line

There is Rahab! Remember Rahab, the Bible calls her the harlot? She is the prostitute in the city of Jericho who hid the spies from the men who wanted to harm them. For saving their lives, they promise when the Israelites come to destroy her city that she and her family will be spared if she hangs a scarlet cord out her window.

Rahab and her family are saved because of her obedience and her fear of the God of Abraham! She becomes part of the family of God and is listed among the ancestry of Jesus!

[Tweet “Rahab is one of only two women mentioned in the “Faith” chapter, Hebrews 11.”]

“By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” Hebrews 11:31 NIV.

So what does it all have to do with Christmas? I think it has plenty to do with this blessed season. There are many people listed in the genealogy accounts of Matthew and Luke. We will look at a few of them this week. Most of them were ordinary people like you and me. But they believed in an extraordinary God, they were expecting the Messiah to come, if they were not already a part of His family they wanted to become a part of His family.

Rahab was very explicit in the second chapter of Joshua when she tells the spies why she is hiding them! “We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt…our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.”

She had not even met this God of the Israelites but she knew He was someone to be reckoned with! She was excited, she was expectant and eager, she couldn’t wait to become a part of this people, and it paid off for her. She was the great-great-great grandmother of King David, an ancestor of Jesus Christ!

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. What will you dwell on today as we enjoy this blessed season?

Presents under the tree?

Your shopping list that keeps growing and your wallet that keeps shrinking?

Your never-ending-to-do-list and the headache that just won’t go away?

Or can we take time to dwell on The One who came as a baby, from the beginning, so He would know everything we have ever experienced…firsthand.

He loves us that much.

He doesn’t care what our family tree looks like, if some of our branches are bending a little too much, the bark is wearing away and the leaves have just about all fallen off.

He doesn’t mind because He came to redeem us.

But I am getting ahead of myself.

What do you see in Rahab? Do you have that kind of expectation, that eagerness for the coming of Christmas?

What about for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ? Are you looking up in anticipation or do you hardly ever think about it?

Join in the discussion today and share your thoughts! I would love to hear from YOU!

31 Days of Christmas

We are welcoming the Christmas season, leading up to Christmas Day and the week following up to New Year’s, with scripture and thoughts on the Reason for the Season.

We want to prepare our HEARTS for His coming!

It is so easy to get caught up in the tinsel and lights, the presents, the shopping, baking, parties, and Christmas plays; and all of those things are great.

But we can so easily forget what we are actually celebrating. Let’s remind each other for a few moments every day.

Some days it might just be a scripture and an image, other days a story or an actual post.

Either way I invite you to be a part of this journey as we ENJOY the meaning of Christmas:

Jesus, the Savior of the World!

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6.

What is your favorite part or tradition of Christmas? What do you do with your family to make it special?

Here is a listing of all the posts on Christmas Carols:
