When you can’t decide

The last ten days have been a challenge for this little blog. We have been down for more than a week and the technicalities of getting back up and running were almost more than I wanted to tackle. I am thankful for my son, Korey, who spent countless hours on the technical side helping me fix everything and for The Sweetheart who finally made it go live again. I appreciate you both! Now on to #FiveMinuteFriday and DECIDE…

When I was little, I used to sing in the shower. Now, I make LIFE DECISIONS in there.

Door #1.

Door #2.

Door #3.

I can remember Monty Hall asking the contestant who had made it to the Big Deal of the Day, “Which door do you want?”

Monty Hall is long gone and replaced by Wayne Brady but the show lives on. Let’s Make a Deal is chock full of decision-making. Some of those decisions leave you with a super nice prize, maybe even a…wait for it…BRAND NEW CAR!

But sometimes, unfortunately, you could be left with what is infamously known as a ZONK. (For those that are not familiar with the game show, a ZONK is a not-so-nice prize and you never get to take it home.)

Zonk

Life is like Let’s Make a Deal in so many ways. We are bombarded with choices on a daily basis and some of them are just trivial things that we must do but others could be life-changing.

Joshua lays it out in the Old Testament, reminding the Israelites of where God had brought them from and then asks the important question, But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 NLT.

As for me and my house

It had come down to just that. The Israelites were always waffling and forever going back to their idols of worship. But that day they made the right decision and put away their worthless idols to serve the One True God.

It comes down to just that for us today too. We have so many things facing us and so many things clamoring for our attention that it is easy to put God on the back burner. He becomes a choice, but a lesser choice; when nothing else is available or whenever we can fit Him in.

But He must be first. He always has been first and He forever will be whether we choose Him or not.Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:7-8.

Let’s put Him in His rightful place today and not make Jesus a choice. Let Him be Lord of all and everything else fall in behind Him. Then the rest of our decisions will be easy ones to make.

Be the Hands and Feet of Jesus!

Be the hands and feet of Jesus!

“No man is an island.” ~ John Donne

“Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you…For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a  drink…when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”  Matthew 25:34-40.

Jesus has always called us to reach to the “least of these”, to serve the needs of others as He did.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.” John 14:12.

One of the greatest examples of the apostles being the Hands and Feet of Jesus in the early Church is found in the third chapter of the Book of Acts. Peter and John were on their way to the Temple to pray like they did every day at around three o’clock. There was a man who was lame from birth being carried in. Every day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one they called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple.

When the lame man saw Peter and John, he asked them for money too, but Peter said, “Look at us! I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazarene, get up and walk!” Acts 3:4-6 NLT.

According to the Word, and the Name of Jesus, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed! He jumped up and began to walk and the Bible said he went “…walking, leaping and praising God…into the Temple with them.” Acts 3:8 NLT.

Peter and John were being the Hands and Feet of Jesus. Jesus had already ascended into Heaven. He had told the disciples to wait for the Promise of the Father, the Comforter, which He would send. And He did. They were all filled with the Holy Ghost, according to Acts 2.

And The Church is born.

Such as I have

[Tweet “We are the continuance of the Early Church; we are the 29th chapter of Acts!”]

And the only way we can continue to write that 29th chapter is to be the Hands and Feet of Jesus.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.Matthew 5:14-16 NIV.

Jesus entrusted us to be the Light when He left us in charge of things here on this earth. Here we find ourselves in the Endtime. It doesn’t take a scholar or a theologian to realize that things are winding down. Jesus is coming back for His Church, His Bride! But that doesn’t mean that we are to sit back and just wait for Him to catch us away. We are to be about our Father’s business. We must be the Hands and Feet of Jesus.

We are responsible to reach out as much as we possibly can, to touch as many as we can with the Good News that Jesus is alive and lives to give eternal life to all who want to partake of it.

“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!’” Romans 10:14, 15 NKJV.

The story is told of a small town in Italy that had a beautiful statue of Jesus in its town square. One day there came a horrific hurricane that devastated the city. The statue was toppled and when the clean-up crew finally came around they found that the statue was mostly intact except that the hands and feet were missing and crushed beyond repair.

It was finally decided to erect the statue back to its original place and a plaque was put up that said, “Jesus has no hands and feet except yours…”

Those words are true for us today. We are His hands and feet in this world. The Sweetheart says this so often in his sermons, “He didn’t save us just to save us. We are here for a bigger purpose. He saved us to reach others.” He means that after salvation we aren’t just to sit down and fold our hands and wait for Heaven. Jesus told us to go into all the world and share this truth; we have a responsibility!

Let us do all we can today to reach our world with the Good News, the Gospel that Jesus Saves!

For the kingdom

Mr. Lincoln, today is your birthday

Growing up in a small town elementary school in the 60’s meant big celebrations. We celebrated Christmas, and we were allowed to call it Christmas. We decorated for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and all four seasons. I can fondly remember my teacher in each grade changing out the bulletin boards and putting up matching alphabet cutouts for each new quarter.

But one of my favorite holidays was President’s Day. I loved Mr. Washington and Mr. Lincoln. They were bigger than life to a tiny, single-digit little girl in southern Indiana. I could hardly contain myself to think that the 16th president of the United States of America actually LIVED nearby ME 100 years before? Holy Top Hat, Batman!

I remember clearly the presidential silhouettes of Lincoln and Washington in our classroom. There was so much respect, honor and dignity associated with those two heroes. We were taught to be appreciative of what they had done to shape this great nation. There was no one to tell me otherwise, I wouldn’t have cared that they weren’t perfect, I would have still been in awe that the good they had accomplished meant that I lived in freedom.

Sixteenth president. Preserved the Union during the Civil War and brought about the Emancipation Proclamation, setting countless thousands free.

Perfect? Most certainly not. Controversial to some? Certainly. This post isn’t about controversy; it’s an abbreviated look at a man who seems to have learned to rely on Almighty God through experience and tragedy.

Abraham Lincoln experienced much misfortune and heartbreak in his shortened life. His brother, Thomas, died as an infant. When Abraham was nine, his mother Nancy passed away of milk sickness at the age of only 34. Before he could become properly engaged to Anne Rutledge, typhoid fever entered New Salem and Anne died…at 22 years old. Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1842 and they had four children together, only one of them, Robert, grew to adulthood. (Eddie died in 1850 of tuberculosis; Willie died of a fever in 1862. Tad died of heart failure at the age of 18, in 1871.)

Inaugurated to the presidency in March, 1861, and by April, Fort Sumter, South Carolina, was already under siege, the beginnings of America’s most deadly conflict.

Nancy Todd Lincoln, in her grief over the death of Willie, only 11, turned to New Age mediums hoping they could help her cope with the loss. Lincoln? He sought out Phineas Gurley who was pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington where the Lincoln’s regularly attended.

When Lincoln assumed the presidency, he said, “I was brought to a living reflection that nothing in my power whatever would succeed without the direct assistance of the Almighty. I have often wished that I was a more devout man than I am. Nevertheless, amid the greatest difficulties of my Administration, when I could not see any other resort, I would place my whole reliance on God, knowing that all would go well, and that He would decide for the right.”

Dr. James Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield where President and Mrs. Lincoln attended for many years before moving to Washington, said this about the President’s faith:

“Dr. Smith explained how he provided Lincoln with a copy of his book and during this time Smith had been praying for a period of weeks that “the Spirit of Truth might lead him into the kingdom of Truth. And such was the result … Lincoln came forth from this examination … a believer in God, in His Providential government, in His Son, the way, the truth and the life. And from that time [nearly seven years] to this day, Lincoln’s life has proved the genuineness of his conversion to the Christian faith.”

Today, there is hardly any celebration for President Lincoln’s birthday. Only four remaining states actually celebrate his birthday on its date. Presidents Day, as we call it, only commemorates Washington’s Birthday; there is technically no national holiday called Presidents Day. The third Monday in February is the date set aside for the federal Washington’s Birthday holiday under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971.

Did you know more states celebrate Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving, the holiday instituted by Lincoln) than Lincoln’s birthday?

[Tweet “Black Friday’s PTO in 18 states! Walmart is more important than honoring founding fathers.”]

Here is some interesting Lincoln trivia for you:

  • He was the only president to have a patent: Lincoln invented a device to free steamboats that ran aground.
  • He practiced law without a degree.
  • He wanted women to have the vote in 1836.
  • Lincoln loved to eat oysters.
  • He used the telegraph like email to communicate with generals.
  • He loved to wrestle!
  • Lincoln’s cat ate at the White House dinner table. (Disgust!)
  • His dog was named Fido; cat was named Tabby.
  • He read the Bible every day.
  • He didn’t drink, smoke, or chew.
  • He didn’t have a middle name and he hated being called Abe.
  • Lincoln established Thanksgiving as a national holiday.
  • Grave robbers tried to steal Lincoln’s body in 1876.
  • He was photographed with John Wilkes Booth at his second inauguration.
  • Lincoln kept his important documents inside his hat.
  • He was the first president with a beard.
  • Lincoln’s shoe size was between 12 and 14.
  • His coffin has been opened five times.
  • Lincoln didn’t attend his father’s funeral.
  • Ulysses S. Grant was to be his guest at Ford’s Theater. He cancelled at the last minute.

So, happy 206th birthday, Mr. President. You weren’t perfect by any means…come to think of it I do not know any perfect people here on this earth and I certainly cannot start the club. But for all you did to make this country great, we thank you.

“Trusting in Him, who can go with me, and remain with you and be every where for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well. To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell.”
Farewell Address on February 11, 1861
