It's not about the food!

The Daniel Fast: It’s not about the food!

It’s the end of another year and many begin the New Year with fasting. Since 2014, I have blogged the month of January about fasting and, in particular, about The Daniel Fast. The response was so overwhelming that you all encouraged a Devotional out of it! Thank you! Beginning January 1, I will be available and be posting devotions and recipes and tips every day to help you on ANY FAST. Join me!

Today, leading up to the Fast, I thought we could focus on making sure we are not more obsessed with what we are eating than the reason for the fast in the first place.

If you have chosen to fast food completely for a few days and drink only water then this isn’t really a problem for you. If you are going to go on a juice fast, and will not be eating regular food, it is also not about the food. But on the Daniel Fast,  sometimes this is a problem.

Quantity wise, you are just eating a regular meal, maybe even less than normal since you are fasting. It isn’t  about heaping your plate and gorging yourself, that surely goes without saying. Some only have their three simple meals a day, others have a light snack in between. There are no rules! This is between you and God, but it should be a sacrifice and an offering unto the Lord.

The biggest problem I see with the popularity of The Daniel Fast is the overload of recipes made to imitate our regular diet. Yes, I even share recipes here on the site and in my Daniel Fast Devotional to help those who have never been on The Daniel Fast or maybe they are just at a loss as to what to fix every night. There is nothing wrong with variety or even enjoying your new way of eating. Some continue on with the Fast FOR LIFE and just have variation and creativity to stay the course.

But we should be careful in being mean constantly consumed with making sweets and treats and decadent concoctions while we are on the Fast…that seems to miss the point, doesn’t it?

It's not about the food!

There are already many Daniel Fast cookbooks on the market and more coming every day. It is easy to get carried away with trying to make all of your meals copycats of your normal foods. Be careful that it doesn’t become a recipe club! Naturally, you will be trying some new things and looking at ways to fix your meals differently, but it should be simple because it is a Fast.

Keep reminding yourself that this is a time to draw near to your Lord, not, “Can I HAVE this?” and, “Am I ALLOWED that?” You are fasting, not continually looking for ways to make your new foods taste like your regular diet.

[Tweet “Fasting is a time for self-denial, not self-indulgence and pleasure.”]

Remember, if you are just fasting and not praying, you are wasting your time. Yes, you might lose a little weight, but if you are doing it for that purpose you are missing the point.

If you are prone to cheating, it is good to clean out your pantry of anything that would tempt you before you begin. The women of Israel got rid of anything with leaven (yeast) in it when they were preparing for the Passover, and many still do it today. If that is helpful to you, do it! There are probably many things in our cupboards that we do not need.

And finally, remember, we are denying ourselves things that we enjoy, so we only eat until we are satisfied. We are not stuffing ourselves until we are sick.

Be blessed as you fast unto the Lord! Feel free to share with us your thoughts today, we would love to hear from you and it may encourage someone else.

Fasting unto the Lord, Nannette

What are we doing about Thursday?

What are we doing about Thursday?

What are we doing about Thursday? This post isn’t necessarily about fasting but I thought it would be appropriate today. If you are following us in the 31 Days of Fasting in January, you can catch up on missed posts here! Please read this true story and let God speak to your heart.

Several weeks ago, my sister-in-law, Dixie, told a true story about a young man in her church and it truly touched many hearts. I hope it blesses you today and causes us all to pause and consider the coming of the Lord and our purpose until He comes. And could you do me a favor? Dixie has been in the hospital since the week before Christmas in serious condition. She is facing a very long recovery and needs the Lord to intervene. He has already done a marvelous work! Would you join us in prayer that He will help speed her healing time? Thank you, we know God is more than able and that He can use this for His glory.

This is Dixie’s explanation of the story with the young man:

A young mother in our church shared with us that when she went in on Monday morning to awaken her son for school that he sat up and asked, “What are we doing about Thursday?” She was puzzled, but asked what he meant.

He told her that the Lord was coming back on Thursday.

He could not say if he’d had a dream or if he had just been impressed by the Lord, but he was quite stirred by this.

He asked his mom, “Are we all ready? Have I told my friends how to be saved?”

This so stirred up our congregation last night; we had one young man receive the Holy Ghost and we had a teenage girl visiting who hadn’t been there for a few years; she prayed and made a new commitment to the Lord!

This was all because of a simple question,

What are we doing about Thursday?

Live every day like it is Thursday!

Of course we do not know that the Lord is coming back for His Church on a Thursday, the Bible is clear that no man knows the day or the hour that the Lord will return. Then, the question remains, why did this young boy, if I remember he was about 10 or 11 years old, why would he have such a dream?

There could be several reasons and there might not be a reason at all. Since he had been to church on Sunday, and it was now Monday morning that Mom was telling him to get up for school, it is likely that either his Sunday School teacher or Pastor had talked about the coming of the Lord. His tender heart immediately went to his friends, neighbors and even family members who were not ready to meet God and possibly he fell asleep praying for them and where they would spend eternity.

This was a child. So, I ask myself, am I as concerned as this young man was about the people I come in contact with on a daily basis? Do I care whether or not they are ready to meet God? Does it matter?

Yes.

It matters whether my heart is stirred for the lost. This is our purpose in being on this earth! Jesus came, He gave, He died, He rose again and then He sent The Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to abide IN us. We became His ambassadors when we took on His name and we are to reflect His glory in all we do and say. I’m sure you have heard the phrase,

[Tweet “You may be the only Jesus some people will ever meet.”]

The goal is for you to introduce them to Jesus so that they can come to know Him and ultimately be ready for that Thursday, whenever it might be.

If the Lord can stir the heart of a pre-teen about His coming, shouldn’t we also be as sensitive to the voice of the Lord? Let us pray, and fast, that we are not so busy that we cannot hear what He is saying or what He is calling us to do in these Last Days. Fasting and prayer will draw us closer to Him, set our sights on eternal treasures and cause the things of this world to become much less important.

And one day soon, it will be Thursday and the Lord will come back for The Church!

Soon.

The Daniel Fast: Chosen, Committed, Commissioned

Chosen, Commissioned.
So glad you are joining us for 31 Days of Fasting Together in January! You can catch up on posts you have missed here.

Prayer and fasting is not just for emergencies. It isn’t only to see fire rain down from heaven, or for God to deliver men from a den of lions. Sometimes, as we are going to see in the Book of Acts, men fasted and prayed asking God’s blessing on something they were about to do.

We still practice that today, and we should always seek the Lord for His direction in the big and the small things in our lives.

Barnabas wanted to take Saul (Paul) to Antioch. This elder in the Church saw something in the new convert that the others were not aware of quite yet. Barnabas was Paul’s teacher, his mentor, and he knew God had big plans in store for this former persecutor of the Church.

“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, ‘Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.’ And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.”  Acts 13:2-3 KJV.

Chosen, committed and commissioned. Barnabas and Paul were sent out as the very first missionaries. They did exactly what Jesus had commanded before He ascended, “…Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15 KJV.

Are you committed? Are you sold out to the cause of Christ? If you have been on the Daniel Fast, or ANY FAST, for any amount of time at all you must be committed to something. You have a desire to live for God and have a longing to draw closer to Him in the New Year. You surely have a yearning to see your loved ones saved, financial needs met, and to get things in your life turned around to so Jesus can use you to make an impact in your world.

You are on the right track! Regular prayer and fasting, daily prayer and digging in the Word of God will help you to move in the right direction.

If you want a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you must spend time with Him. If you never communicate, you cannot know Him. If you never talk to your husband or wife and there is rarely any communication, that relationship is not going to last very long. If it is a new relationship, it will not even get off of the ground.

Fasting cleanses your heart of things that shouldn’t be there and illuminates others that you didn’t realize had moved in.

“Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them….” is what the Holy Ghost said.

Strive to be separated, through regular prayer and fasting, and see what God will do through you.

Blessings to you on your journey while denying your flesh and drawing closer to God. You will see revival in your church, your family and your world!
