The Friday that was Good

Good Friday everyone. This is the Friday that was Good. Blessed be the Name of the Lord! Thank you Jesus for Calvary! Thank you for the cross. And even though it’s a couple of days away, I am so thankful He didn’t stay in the tomb. It is empty!!

You can read my other posts on Holy Week here, here, herehere and here. Please come back tomorrow and Resurrection Morning (before or after church!) for our final conclusion.

“And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last. Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” Mark 15:37, 38 NKJV.

The veil in the Temple separated the Holy Place from the Holiest of Holies. Only the High Priest could even enter the Holiest of Holies, no one else was allowed. Inside was the Ark of the Covenant, which held the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod that budded, and Manna. The High Priest could only go into the Holiest of Holies once a year to roll away the sins of the people for another 365 days. (Day of Atonement)

This Holiest of Holies represented the presence of God.

The Israelites could not approach God for themselves. They had to have others to plead for their sins.

But everything changed on the Friday that was Good.

It is a Holy Friday and with good reason! We cannot talk of the Cross without realizing there was a Holy God, a Good God, paying the price.

Look at all that was going on in the spirit world when Jesus was dying.

When Jesus took His last and final breath, the earth shook violently, thunder rolled and a magnificent thing happened in the Temple. The massive curtain, which, according to Jewish historical descriptions, was approximately 30 feet wide, 60 feet high and three inches thick, was impossible for man to rip apart! It was said that it took 300 priests just to wash it. That’s big.

That veil separated man from God’s presence. So when God literally tore it into two pieces, from the top to the bottom, it was very significant.

“But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” Isaiah 59:2.

When Jesus died, things changed forever. We could now enter that Holy Place, God’s Presence, all by ourselves. Without fear!

“Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh…” Hebrews 10:19-20.

Now the priests were no longer the only ones who could WORSHIP!

Worship was now for everyone.

Do you realize what that means?

We are able to worship the Savior personally, have a living relationship with the One who hung on the cross!

And…it gets better.

We  can, and should, worship God anywhere!

  • In a church, yes, please worship Him there!
  • Out in the woods? Worship Him!
  • Walking down the road? Worship Him!
  • Driving in your car? Worship Him!
  • About to have a meal? Worship!
  • Breathing today? Worship, worship, worship!

“Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16.

Because of Calvary, because of “It is finished”, we have direct access to Jesus Christ.

Don’t be discouraged today if you are quarantined on this Friday that is Good. Rejoice because the veil was torn and wherever WE are, HE is!

Friday is Good because without Friday there would be no Resurrection Sunday. Join me tomorrow as we anticipate the Risen Savior.

God answers fearless prayer

Mesmerized. That’s how I describe my fascination with Joshua, the son of Nun.

This man was encouraged time and time again by God to be courageous and without fear.

“Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” Joshua 1:9.

“And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed…” Joshua 8:1.

Armed with that kind of courage, Joshua gathers forces to help the people of Gibeon in Joshua 10. The Gibeonites had made a treaty with Israel and because of that alliance the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces to attack Gibeon. Gibeon then sent word to Joshua for help.

God answers fearless prayer

Joshua didn’t just send a token group of fighting men, he marched with his entire army to defeat the five kings. The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”

Joshua is able to take them by surprise as the Lord brings confusion to the enemy. As they are running away from the Israelites the Bible says, “…the Lord hurled large hailstones down on them, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.”

But it’s the next part that is so unbelievable it had to be God!

On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar.” Joshua 10:12, 13.

The sun and the moon stood still! “The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!”

God answers fearless prayer

The Israelites were winning the battle but more time was needed to completely defeat the enemy. If they didn’t conquer them before dark they could possibly regroup and come back to attack the Israelites again the next day.

We won’t go into HOW it happened. Yes, we understand the EARTH is what does the orbiting, not the sun or the moon, but even today we say the sun rises and sets so it is not necessarily out of order for Joshua to address the sun and moon instead of the earth itself.

So, what can we take away from this miraculous event?

Courage.

Joshua was given his courage by Almighty God. Yahweh, Jehovah, the Maker of the Universe told Joshua on many occasions not to be afraid; He was always with him and He would fight his battles.

When Joshua realized he needed a miracle, he not only was without fear, he knew where his strength came from and where his backup forces would be! God had told him that none of the enemy would escape so with that confidence, Joshua didn’t hesitate to tell God just what he needed to finish the battle.

And God answered his fearless prayer.

What I like even better than the sun and moon standing still is that Joshua has learned so much from his faithful God that he passes it on to his followers. “And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.” Joshua 10:25.

Do those words sound familiar? Joshua is now encouraging the people with the same words that the Lord had used to give him strength and courage! He had seen Him do the impossible on more than one occasion, God was faithful in every battle. Now, with boldness, he could tell the people he was chosen to lead to put their trust in this God who never fails.

God answers fearless prayer

What kind of enemy are you facing today? Does it seem impossible for God to even show up?

Do you feel as if you need more resources, more time, or more courage to take up the fight?

Friend, you don’t have to! God wants to fight the battle for you and in the midst of the battle He wants you to be without fear. Cling to His promises found in the Word of God and put your trust in the God who delivers. Every. Single. Time.

The God of Israel is fighting for you!

And He Gave Them Their Request…

“And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.” Psalms 106:15

One of the very first articles I ever penned had this title on it. I was so intrigued by this verse in the Bible; I just had to study it out. That was many years ago and it still fascinates me.

lean

The children of Israel had just been delivered out of the hands of the Egyptians. After years and years of hard labor under their Egyptian taskmasters they were finally free! God had just showed His mighty hand by bringing them through the Red Sea on dry ground…as soon as they had crossed over, the Lord covered their enemies completely, never to be seen again.

But how quickly they would forget all of the Lord’s mercies and His miracles! They were always complaining, always wanting more, never satisfied. So what is the verse particularly referring to in the Psalm? We take a journey into the Book of Numbers to find out.

In the beginning of the eleventh chapter the people of Israel are still in the wilderness, roughly the second year after their departure from Egypt. They are complaining, again, about their “hardship” and the Bible says, “…the Lord heard everything they said.”  Numbers 11:1.

God was so angry that He sent a fire and destroyed some of the people that were on the outskirts of the camp. Once again, the Israelites cry to Moses for help and he prays to the Lord and the fire stops.

But interestingly, the mixed multitude among them, some versions call them the “riffraff” or “foreign rabble”, began to crave the good things of Egypt.

And that made the Israelites complain too! “Oh, for some meat!” they exclaimed. “We remember the fish we used to eat for free in Egypt. And we had all the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic we wanted. But now our appetites are gone. All we ever see is manna!” Numbers 11:4-6.

Now this “manna” that they are griping about was as sweet as honey. All they had to do was walk out their door every morning and there it was lying on the ground. Fresh as the morning dew, God supplied it straight from heaven. They would pick it up and grind it with hand mills or pound it in mortars. They boiled it in a pot and made it into flat cakes that tasted like pastries baked with olive oil. It truly was heavenly!

But it wasn’t enough for the Israelites. They wanted more. They were not satisfied that their needs were being met. They had everything supplied for them every day. In all of the years that they wandered in the wilderness the Bible says even their sandals never wore out!

“For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell.” Deuteronomy 8:4 NLT.

And another verse says it this way, “Yet the LORD says, During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.” Deuteronomy 29:5 NIV.

Moses, at this point is at his wits’ end and cries out to the Lord for help. “What did I do to deserve the burden of all these people?…Where am I supposed to get meat for all these people? They keep whining to me saying, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ I can’t carry all these people by myself! The load is far too heavy! If this is how you intend to treat me, just go ahead and kill me. Do me a favor and spare me this misery!’” Numbers 11:11-15.

The Lord has a plan, He always has a plan. But this time He is not pleased with their actions. He tells Moses to gather seventy men who are recognized as elders and leaders of Israel to stand with him and that He will come down and talk to them there. He will take some of the Spirit that is on Moses and put it on the leaders as well. They will help bear the burden of the people so Moses will not have to carry it alone.

Then He tells him to say to the people, “Purify yourself, for tomorrow you will have meat to eat. You are whining, and the Lord heard you when you cried, ‘Oh, for some meat! We were better off in Egypt!’ Now the Lord will give you meat and you will have to eat it. And it won’t be for just a day or two, or for five or ten or even twenty. You will eat it for a whole month until you gag and are sick of it. For you have rejected the Lord, who is here among you, and you have whined to him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’” Numbers 11:18-20 NLT.

So sure enough the Lord sent a wind that brought quail from the sea and let them fall all around the camp! For miles in every direction the Bible says there were quail flying three feet above the ground! The people were so excited they went out and caught quail all that day and night and all the next day too. No one gathered less than 50 bushels of quail!

Now here is the sad part: They spread the quail all around the camp to dry. “But while they were gorging themselves on the meat–while it was still in their mouths–the anger of the Lord blazed against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague. So that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah (which means “graves of gluttony”) because there they buried the people who had craved meat from Egypt.” Number 11:32-34 NLT.

You see, they received what they asked for, they whined, they complained, they griped until Moses couldn’t take it anymore and until the Lord was angry.

leanness

The Israelites thought they had already paid too high of a price. They were tired of their way of life in the wilderness, wandering around in the desert. They were so weary of it that they even preferred to go back to their life of slavery than to stay and have the provisions given by Almighty God.

Manna from heaven every day or slavery in Egypt, doesn’t seem like too difficult of a choice to make to us, does it? They couldn’t have survived in the wilderness on the rich food that they had in Egypt. Manna was light and healthy and suitable for their wilderness lifestyle. But they were not satisfied.

We tend to make similar complaints every day ourselves. We may ask for things that are not the will of God for our lives. We have our needs supplied but we want more. Bright lights, big city! We should be careful of what we are craving, God might grant us our request, and it just might send leanness into our soul. Another translation said it sent a plague or a wasting disease.

Whether it is physical things like wealth and riches, a spiritual famine, or dwelling on life’s worries, if we aren’t careful, these things can cause leanness in our soul if left unchecked.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer made the observation that when lust takes control, “At this moment God loses all reality. Satan does not fill us with hatred of God, but with forgetfulness of God.”

Leanness of soul can develop in us so slowly and unnoticed. We start losing interest in the things of God and begin desiring other things to take His place. When our lives get too busy with the cares of this life we don’t have as much time for the things we once did for the Lord. We are busy, but busy in the body and lean in our soul.

“O God, thou art my God; earnestly will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee, In a dry and weary land, where no water is.” Psalm 63:1.

What are our motives? What do we really want for our lives? Are riches your ultimate goal? If so, you are going to be terribly disappointed come Judgment Day. Did you know you can’t take all of those things with you? There is nothing wrong with having nice things, don’t misunderstand, but if that is all you ever think about, if you are consumed with THINGS, then your priorities are not pleasing to God.

He may give you what you ask for…but you may not have what really counts.

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36.

Be careful what you pray for, you might just get it…
