Sweet Jenni at www.storyofmylifetheblog.blogspot.com issued a fun challenge to bloggers to blog Every Single Day in May and she supplied the topics for all 31 days. Yep, I’m behind, but there are no rules, and no blog police come knocking if you miss, skip, or mess up. So, hey, I’m in!
Day 15, (or 3) Wednesday: Most embarrassing moment (s). Spill.
As a Pastor’s wife, you try to be all things to all people, all of the time. You must always say the right thing. You definitely better know when to keep your mouth closed.
You must wear the right clothes; walk just right, sit just right, and even smell just right. Too much perfume might make someone nauseous.
You smile at just the right time. You nod and shake your head appropriately.
You say that everyone’s baby is adorable, yes, everyone’s baby is adorable. Bless their little heart.
You make sure you shake everyone’s hand, every Sunday. Someone might be offended. You even stand outside of the bathrooms to make sure you haven’t missed anyone. It is that important.
You are the Pastor’s wife. Your husband is the Pastor. You must not embarrass the Pastor.
You make sure you play the right song at the right time in the right key at just the right tempo. Because you are the Pastor’s wife and your husband is the Pastor and you must not embarrass the Pastor.
One Sunday morning, this wonderful Pastor had preached his most beautiful sermon. He had the congregation stand, the musicians come, and he was still beckoning the sinner to “come home”. You could hear the saints begin to pray and softly weep, fighting for the very souls of those who were knocking at the Gates of … well, you know…
The mood was somber, prayerful, souls hung in the balance. I flipped on the keyboard and turned around to get my notebook. This was going to be one time I wish I had chosen OnSong and my iPad!
As I sat back down on the piano bench I heard a “click, click, click” and then the loudest rendition of “Jingle Bells” I believe I have ever heard in my life!
I looked behind me at the drummer, Kyle, I thought “What in the world!” And then over at my son, Korey, who was our worship leader, it was all happening so fast and oddly, so slowly, like a bad dream. Korey just had this sick look on his face.
Then my eyes met his…the Pastor…and I realized it was ME! I had hit a button on the keyboard with my notebook and the rest is history. Most Embarrassing Moment History.
What do you do with a situation like that one? My Pastor smiled, looked over at the keyboard player and said, “Well, honey, I think we will just call it a night.” And everyone finally let go of the laughter that they were trying so hard to hold in! There was no point in trying to drag anyone in to Heaven now. If they hadn’t come yet they weren’t going to come!
If you know me, you know I am the type to apologize for everything at least ten times or more. I felt bad about it more than embarrassed. I was afraid I was surely keeping someone from entering the Pearly Gates!
But that handsome Pastor assured me all was well and that even God probably laughed at that one.
And as a Pastor’s wife, you believe everything the Pastor says…Amen.
